Show -- WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS juURNAL, JANUARY 27, 1977 IS POETf The annual spawning run of the unique Bear Lake cisco finally began this year on Tuesday, Jan 18. Division of Wildlife Resources officer, LeVon Thomas, reported the first few fish were spotted on the aptly named Cisco Beach located on the east side of Bear Lake. Layton: The Team To Beat In Region 2 points than they could score. Next to Gilbert, the leading Layton scorer was Cal Roberts who only had eight points. But when your center scores at will why bother to score yourself. Mark OGDEN, FOR Snedley hit for 16 points and Jeff Williams added 12 more but all was in vain as the heighth of Layton was too much. The Tigers did get the services of Mike Dockery who missed last weeks game with Viewmont but with the week layoff, Dockery could only muster five points. Layton coach, Doug Moon was pleased with the win, noting that they have always had their problems winning at the Tigers court. Many teams have found that out this year as the Ogden five have a good home record but have problems on the road. by DAVE WIGHAM You can only hold down a good basketball player for so long until he finally takes out his frustrations on someone. IF YOU dont believe me ust ask Ogden High Coach Rod Oyler, last week his Tigers went at Layton and their big man, Johnny Gilbert. In the first two region games, Gilbert was held, by one means or another, to only 25 total points in the two encounters. Friday big John exploded for 35 points against the smaller Tiger bunch. GILBERT WAS tabbed in the early going as the main cog m the Lancer offense, and at 68 why not, so clubs do everything and anything to stop him. Bountiful sagged on him, Clearfield sagged on him, both were some what successful. Ogden tried everything they knew but when Gilbert wants the ball and the Lancers get him the ball, hes almost impossible to stop as he was Friday in First place team in area youth soccer was the Village Green Hornets. This was a must win for 58-5- 0 Clearfield who dropped a home encounter last week To try to catch up to a Roger Reid coached team is like giving O J Simpson a a hundred-yardash Once the Falcons get on top, they go to their ten-yar- lead d in d very controlled and disciplined offense which at times takes up to three minutes of the clock before a shot ever goes up PATIENCE IS a hard factor to teach to high school placers but Roger has accomplished it at Clearfield Another characteristic of Clearfield has been the absence of a superstar, each week a different player will be the leading scorer This week was no exception as Scott Wallace came off the bench to lead the Falcons with 16 points BIGGEST difference in this of defenses that Clearfield thiew at the Scots Time and time contest was the varietv again the Clearfield crew would switch their defense and confuse the Ben umnnd squad The Scots did get their usual performance out of their two big men, Mark Clearfield completely shut off the scoring from the Ben Lomond guard line, in past games the Scots have received good scoring from their especially guards, sophomore Robbie Tillman, but the Falcons didnt allow a guard to score in double figures CLEARFIELD was never able to rest during the game as the Scots refused to fold and get blown out but at the same time Ben Lomond wasnt able to close the gap It was a game for the Falcon five as d the Scots in they three of the four quarters to inch away from the Scots time after time Clearfield never has been known to run away and hide with a ball game but to get behind them by only a couple of field goals is like being behind by ten or fifteen the way they protect the ball well-balance- d Kaysville Mr and Mrs Golden Tailor had her mother Mrs Rosana White of Bountiful to their home on Sun , Jan 16 to honor her on her 96th Mrs birthday anniversary White was an overnight guest for the special occasion She is from Bountiful 1 Quale Quale added and Dee lenmngs had 17 while lenmngs 11 more But from there on it was ill under tr points tor the Suits THE (1051 SI tin Suns got to Clearfield w is a three point margin ust betme the half but the I uk mix st irtt d out strong in the stumd half Mrs Rilduh Smith has been confined to the Davis North Medical Center the past week undergoing treat ment for pneumonia Mr and Mis Rulon Waite and family attended the Brigham 'iming I niversitv lec ture 1 hm x evt ning in Provo in which Mr Waite's brother. Then losing to Viewmont in a double overtime the Braves are ready to take out their frustrations on someone A plus for the Braves is that it's on their home court, after playing well on ;he road last week the Braves will be anxious to put their home court advantage to good use ALSO THIS will be the first time in region play that the Braves are as tall as their opponents. Clearfields main concern or problem will be how to stop Bountifuls Dale Ohlson. If Coach Roger Reid can figure that out he could make a lot of money selling his plan to the other coaches in the region Three have tried so far and have not been successful MANY observers felt that his performance last week against Viewmont was the best all aiound effort he has put on since putting on a Brave jersey Dale not only scored his usual 25 points but he hustled on defense causing many Vike turnovers down the stretch Offensively or defensively Dale couldnt have played a better game than he did against Viewmont Dale, however, wasnt satisfied because the Braves lost which is a good indication of the thinking and attitude of this great placer MAY BE Coach Reid will do like (he others let Ohlson get his points and stop the others Center Irvv W illiams probably won't know how to react with a player his own height on him Against taller opponents the big redhead has been ef fee live, who knows what he can do with omeone his own height at rv Barnedt, oil Pendleton and Brian Slagowski all scored well last week and aie anxious to prove it wasn't a fluke the junior varsiiv game Slag went to work show ing the coaches he does know how to shoot and drive the b ill if hi starts scoring for someone DUTCH BOY CARPET CLEANERS Over 20 Yrs Experience t Mr. Steam Cleaning Special!! Windy conditions prior to the migration kept ice from forming, making it necessary for fishermen to wade into the chilly waters in search of the slender members of the whitefish family.
