LAST YEAR was our maiden attempt and about eight student composers submitted works which were evaluated by Dr. Merrill Bradshaw, professor of composition at BYU. This year the clinician and evaluator will be Vladimir Ussachevsky, composer in residence aT the University of Utah. STUDENT TEACHERS PROFESSOR Ussachevsky has established a distinguished record in the field of Electronic Music. He has been professor of music, Columbia University since 1947. He was one of the founders of tape music. He is a Electronic director, Columbia-Princeto- n Music Center which houses the RCA Sound Synthesizer. Randee Munas. Agricultural Department has two new student teachers, im Bennett and Randee Munns. MR. BENNETT will be student teaching under Nile Carlson in the classroom and in the green house. Mr. Bennett is originally from Tremonton. He graduated from Bear River High School, and is now attending Utah State University. He is married and lives in Riverside, Utah. MR. MUNNS will be working under Dave Potter in the Ag Mechanics shop and classroom. He is from Garland, Utah and also graduated from Bear River High. He is attending Utah State University. He and his wife live in Garland. The officers and members of Clearfield Chapter would like to welcome them to Clearfield. 5 is The week of Feb. FFA Week. On Tuesday a checker tournament will start. All FFA members are welcome to participate. Also, at lunch a nail drive for the 19-2- i 9 sweethearts will take place. THIS IS the first of many activities planned for the sweetheart contestants. Wednesday there will be a pie eating contest for FFA members. The sweethearts will prepare a casserole to show their domestic abilities. Thursday, the sweethearts will milk cows and the members will have a And on Friday the final day, there will be an obstacle course contest for any one interested. AFTER SCHOOL there will be a tractor driving contest HIS INNOVATIONS r. Professor Ussachevsky will inspect the student scores, listen to performances and then make valuable suggestions and comments to each student composer individually. for the members and the sweethearts, and in the evening there will be a tea held for the sweetheart contestants. We would like to ask everyone to come out and support hte activities that have been planned. Also proficiency award applications are available for anyone wishing to apply for an award. These awards are based on record books. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to apply for awards. are entering piano compositions for this years festival are Sheryl Wilde, Viewmont; HIGH SCHOOL students who Gordon Murdock, Layton; Chris Wood, Bountiful; Sheryl Moore and Charles Steffens, Clearfield; and Spencer Thompson and Mark Nielson from Woods Cross. The two junior high students submitting compositions this year are Joyce Bench, orpiano, Central Davis and Keith Gold, gan solo, Centerville. OF COURSE, composition is not taught in the public schools, and so most of these and for the students are t. He began teaching at the beginning of the new semester, Jan. 17. Home Economics: Glasses To Be More Broadly Based? Junior High Home Economics teachers in Davis County schools feel the Home Economics program needs to be more broadly based to include career exploration in early years, Superintendent Bemell Wrigley said. FOR THIS reason Davis teachers were invited by the State Department of Vocational Education and the Utah State University to join with ten other districts to pilot a program in Home Economics career exploration similar to that used in the industrial arts department at North Layton and North Davis Junior High School. Last week the Davis school board approved the adoption of the program, which includes 26 portable career modules. Superintendent Wrigley said the program is functioning at North Davis and North Layton Junior Highs. He said the modular program allows students to take small programs and do one concept at a time. Layton High Will Present First Musical Of The Year Bright lights and flashy costumes will hit the stage of the Little Theatre of Layton High School as they present their first musical this year -The Boy Friend tonight, Friday, and Saturday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. UNDER THE direction of The Boy Dennis Ferrin, Friend is a witty, stylish comedy of the Jazz Age. The setting takes place at the French Riviera where Polly (played by Karen Brimley), a millionaires daughter, is attending Mme. Dubonnets (Cheryl Paul) fashionable finishing school. She falls in love with Tony (Doug Pennock), a delivery boy, who, of course turns out to be the son of Lord Brockhurst (Kevin Egan). To hold his interest, Polly pretends that shes a working fcirl. The Debate Team of Matt Orzen and Richard McLeod went all the way with eight undefeated rounds. In the final round they received their only loss. They were awarded Second Place in the entire tournament. THE LEGISLATIVE Team took sweepstakes in their event. All four members of this team broke out in the final round - only one other school out of 58 had four in the finals. In the final round all four Layton students won positions for sweepstakes points. The Legislative team was composed of Vicki Robinson, John Alex, Richard Evans, and Dan OBryan. JOHN ALEX was awarded best chair, and Dan OBryan led the Layton Squad as high point winner.
