The men tied with Ann Harris for first place in business improvement honors at a recent Layton Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. improvement commendations were presented at Layton Chamber of Commerces first annual awards banquet which was held at the Valley View Restaurant recently. OMA WILCOX was presented with the service award and is the first woman in the history of the city to receive it. Mrs. Wilcox has been active in church and community affairs for many years. She has served in several positions in the LDS Church, including Sunday School teacher, counselor, Relief Society former city councilwoman, president of Utah Heritage Foundation, member of Weber State College Board of Trustees, Pioneer Museum Board, and Layton Library Board. She is a governor appointed member of the State Family Services Board and is currently serving for the 11th year. Mrs. Wilcox was educated in Davis County schools and attended Utah State Agricultural College. She is married to George Wilcox and they have one daughter Catherine (Mrs. Gibbs M.) Smith. stake and ward president, and chairman of the board of the Lion House in Salt Lake City. He is the former Davis High School Band Instructor. For the first time an Elementary Music Award was presented and also went to a Davis County teacher, Evelyn Hansen a sixth grade teacher at Boulton Elementary. This award was presented to a classroom teacher who has inspired elementary children in the humanities. Wayne James, Utahs Outstanding Music Educator is past president of the Utah Music Educators Association. He has taught band, orchestra and chorus at all grade levels. HE TAUGHT band at Boun- tiful High School, band and orchestra at South Davis and Bountiful Jr. Highs before taking his present position as music supervisor in Davis County. James initiated the annual Davis Cup Marching festival and stirred a new interest and half-tim- e in marching bands shows. He worked with the States music committee to obtain funding through the legislature for elementary music in the state. He helped the state solo and ensemble festival. He provides monthly inservice workshops for the choral, band, and orchestra teachers in the district. UNDER HIS supervision a new handbook for the junior high music exploration classes was developed. TWO $450 scholarship awards are being offered to any senior parochial school student in Utah who plans to enter college during the coming academic year. This popular annual competition measures the students familiarity with the public-private-- NAME BRANDS American Labor Movement by means of an examination and essay. These exams will then be independently judged by University Professors. DOOR CRASHERS SCHOLARSHIP THE awards may be used at any accredited college or university in the United States. Interested students need to make application through their high schools by March 11. All Utah high school principals and class advisors have further information. GMes Glean and senior high choral, band and orchestra, in the district, region and state. Born in Hyrum he attended South Cache High and played trombone in the band and orchestra. While in high school he organized his own dance band, wrote and arranged the music for the band. HE SERVED Uncle for four years, flying Sam 63 mis- sions over Germany. He completed his B.A. and Masters degree at Utah State University and received his Education Specialists Degree from the University of Utah. Wayne has given tremendous direction and guidance to the music educators in Davis County and they have produced some of the most outstanding music groups in the state and country. Davis County music educators, as well as those in the state, have a high regard for Wayne James. MR. HANSEN former The students learned to play auto harps, recorders, zylophones, piano, baritone ukes, combined with the instruments brought from home including guitars, flute, cello, string bass, home made and classroom drum sets. TOGETHER the whole class would sing while improvising and accompaniments developed a classroom orchestra and jazz group. Before coming to Bountiful, Evelyn was a teacher in Boise, Ida., where she received a National Award for excellence in teaching, the Masonic Award for contribution to children and her classroom was chosen to be filmed for a documentary. THE ROOKIE Award has Vandalism bands at the University of Utah. While at Davis High School, the band received first place in the Davis Cup Marching Festival, was selected to represent Utah in Washington, D.C. at the Cherry Blossom Parade. Davis High Band was Region Vs outstanding band for solo and ensemble entries. Region V and Region IPs ou- tstanding concert band, winner of the USU outstanding concert band. Greggs mother, Fae Hanson received the States first Outstanding Music Educator Award. EVEYLN HANSEN has been a teacher at Boulton Elementary for years. She is one of those rare individuals who has the talent, motivation and dedication to help students develop to their individual potential through the use of the humanities. Exciting music learning centers were developed in her sixth grade classroom. These covered all phases of music. ?V ? Helquist came to our county as a 1975, BYU graduate. She started right in with our summer program and became orchestra director at both Viewmont High School and HAINES T SHIRTS Woods Cross High School. She was also of the orchestra at Bountiful Junior High and taught fifth OR SHORTS and sixth grade students at West Bountiful Elementary. All of her festival groups gained superior ratings. As if this were not enough by itself, DeAnne drives to school each day from Orem. When officials opened the school on Mon. Jan. 17, they found student lockers torn apart and clothes thrown all over. WAS ENTRY gained through a window in the kitchen where items from there were strewn about. The vandals exited through the south door of the cafeteria. Officials believe that possibly two people are involved and there were indications that one or both of them had been cut. Layton police called in the Davis County Crime Lab and it was reported that some good evidence was found. THE EXTENT of the damage was mainly to property although a pocket calculator was also stolen.
