However, he has been notably productive in portraiture and mural painting, drawing, etching, lithography, pastel and desig- n- demonstrating an equally sensitive understanding and facility in all. HIS LIFE is distinguished further by a parallel teaching career dating from 1911, when he became an elementary instructor in the Murray city, schools, followed in 1914 in the Davis County Elementary Schools. At East Side High School, Salt Lake City, in 1922, he served as head of the art department. This appointment was succeeded by 17 years in the same capacity at Ogden Senior High School. HE LEFT Ogden to become, chairman of the Art Department at the U of U in Salt Lake City, retiring in 1956 as professor emeritus. From his keen and discerning capabilities as an art educator, a following of well trained students have enriched the art climate of Utah. From 1915 to 1975, Artist Stewart has continuously exhibited and won awards throughout the state of Utah as well as throughout the nation. HE HAS been recipient of Sweepstakes awards, first place awards, purchase awards, one man shows and a two man show with son Maynard Dixon Stewart as well as numerous other honors.
