Show -- WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, JULY 29, 1976 IS Editorial Brenda Hunsaker is Utahs first lady conservation officer (C O.). She started working for the Division of Wildlife Resources the first of July and will be a conservation officer at large, working in the Salt Lake County area. raft M Americans are always moving westward, said Stephen Vincent Benet in his Western Star. As we have celebrated our bicentennial, we have repeatedly honored those who framed the constitution which enabled a nation to expand into the huge western frontier. THIS MONTH we will honor the pioneer who made that westward trek and opened a wilderness so civilization could follow, and it is just and right that we should remember and that we should pav homage to those who gave us so much. Some who have observed our bicentennial celebration have been alarmed at the looking back. As a nation we are not looking toward a brighter tomorrow; we are looking back at what others have done. DO WE believe, as the song says, Everythings up to date in Kansas City. Theyve gone about a fur as they can go? Remember the man who wanted to close the patent office in 1867 because everything worth inventing had been invented? But there are still unopened frontiers and there remain unchanging truths upon which we can build a secure life. IF fitting that we should remember and pay honor to those who built the foundations upon which we stand, but-i-t is not enough for us to remember. We must also rededicate our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. Each of us is a pioneer and one day generations who IS follow will look back at us. In this changing world there are still truths which have not and will not change. There are still frontiers whose expanses have barely been glimpsed. These are the human frontiers; the unknown world inside each human being and how each of us relate to and is responsible for other people. WE STILL have not learned is a verb. It that-neighb- We know we are on the verge of an even greater explosion of knowledge and technology. There are undreamed of frontiers just opening in every field of learning. The old unchanging patterns are changing. The things we have always known are often no longer true. PERHAPS part of the uneasiness we feel in the nation which is causing us to look backward this bicentennial is because the technical world is changing faster than we can assimilate. There are so few places to stop and rest because our society is on the move. fa to J 376-160- 3 BILLS PRESSING? Why HARASSMENT AND PROBLEM OF TRYING TO SATISFY ALL OF YOUR CREDITORS EVERY MONTH. Nothing less will solve the problems which are so insurmountable that we have turned our backs on them and as a nation are celebrating the bicentennial not by pledging ourselves to a new birth of freedom, but to remembering what others did to build the foundations upon which we so comfortably stand. John Steinbeck wrote a story The Leader of the People" in which he told of a grandfather who had led a wagon train to California. He spent the rest of his life telling everyone about it until he became a bore.
