Haslem City aglow for holiday daydreaming the imagination of trick or treating children Jennie and Norma don't hand out let the sweets on llalloween-th- ey youngsters come in and gaze in amazement at the result of their decades of collecting ceramic Christmas village buildings, complete with tiny lights. This year 71 children came to see the lighted town by Maureen Spencer Express Wnter hen Jennie Haslem and her daughter Norma Shaw start humming, Its beginning to Itnik a lot like Chnstmas, its actually and the two are combining efforts to get ready for the anticipated Halloween display that captures VS r Some of them just come in and lay on the floor so they can see it all." says Jennie. The display remains in place until January, when the two dismantle the collection until next October. Jennie says it takes about three days to set up each years show Norma builds the tiered stands covered with bonded batting snow, and bristling with hidden extension cords, while Jennie unwraps the pieces By actual count, there are over 100 buildings in the collection. There are even collections within the collections-t- he churches collec tion, and the lighthouse collection join the business buildings collection and the schools collection, and the sledding children collection, and the horsedrawn cart and sleigh collections. In addition to the buildings are countless children and adult figures performing assorted duties, fences, street lamps, trees, furniture, wharves, boats, horsedrawn wagons, covered bridges, gunidrop trees, snow people, trains, trucks, busses, outhouses, sleds, market carts and reindeer. Norma assembles the whole city on layers of tables, plywood shelves, and elevations created from food storage cans. Some buildings are special to Jennie, like the greenhouse which is reminiscent of the greenhouse with which her family is associated. Look at that replica of the first IGA store to open-the- res fruit and food on the counters inside, Jennie points out with a grin. Some pieces have been brought to use from around the country. Norma and Jennie have painted a few of the pieces themselves.
