Ask for a mask when visiting the doctor The Ask for a Mask public awareness campaign was officially launched locally in an effort to help control the spread of respiratory illnesses, such as influenza. Joseph B. Shaffer, director of Health Department TriCounty announced the recent collaborative effort between the Utah Department of Health (UDOH), in partnership with several local health systems, hospitals and local health departments. With - limited influenza vaccine supplies and increased levels of influenza-lik- e illness circulating in Utah, it is important that the public understand how to protect themn selves and those around therm from infectious diseases. Simple surgical masks are an effective, low-tec- h way to keep many respiratory illnesses from spreading in health care settings, says Dr. Robert Rolfs, state epidemiologist, UDOH. Health care professionals are used to wearing masks, says Rolfs, but this will be something new for patients or visitors to health care facilities. I urge Utahns to take these basic infection control measures to heart and do their part to help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses. Cough, cold and flu season is here and beginning this week, visitors to Utah's health care offices and buildings will be asked to do their part to keep respiratory illnesses from spreading. The Ask for a Mask" promotion encourages those visiting health care buildings to request a mask if they have a fever with cough or rash and to wear it for the duration of their : Rulon Dutson of Bear West shows Uintah High School students community planning maps to those attending the commission Commission, public receive general plan update draft A group of 40 citizens joined the Uintah County Commission at its evening meeting Dec. 2, to hear and raise concerns about the Uintah County General Plan Update, 2003. The summary was a draftupdate of the county vision and objectives, presented by Rulon Dutson of Bear West, a professional project consulting firm. The document is the next step in the Uintah Countys planning process involving citizen review of the comments gathered during citizen scoping activities and reconfirmation of previously adopted county goals and objectives. Similar to the countys 1995-9- 6 Plan, the summary presents and discusses county priorities by topic and includes land use and community development, growth and development, land use ordinances, residential land uses, agricultural land uses, industrial land uses and sensitive areas and resources. Economic development, community services, infrastructure, transportation, natural resources and publiq lands, are also addressed. Dutson told commissioners this plan would assist staff who should benefit from having the guidelines of the preliminary document. Based upon public meetings and the response from 9,000 surveys distributed to residents, the summary did not include the public lands portion of the plan. The public lands portion study had ended in August, although the public comment did not end then. Commissioner Mike McKee assured those attending, the plans may need revisions for different issues as the process moves along. One resident cited the need for careful zoning, saying he didnt want to be downwind of industrial , pig and chicken farms. that stressed Commissioners when the county writes a plan, it must not be put on a shelf, but be a living document that may be kept up to date for long term use. The commissioners felt following the plan and keeping it alive should avoid taxing mistakes in the future. One patron said increased residential building around agricultural areas seems desirable to many, until the newer residents become upset and call the police about farmers who have to do their hay baling at 2 a.m. She urged clarification in the plans to provide protection to those who must still produce a living from the land. Gaiwin Snow said plans look pretty on paper but he feared the loss of certain individual property rights. Lack of proper planning, he said, leads to encroachment on existing rights of ways, canals and drainages. Commissioners urged all citizens to review and make comments and suggestions on the revised plan, making sure thg issues they want to be addressed, are in it. All three commissioners invited citizens to come to the office to either review or obtain copies of the update summary, and to fill out question forms which are provided. The comment forms need to be received by Dec. 23. Additionally, forms may be submitted Heather to Hoyt Brian (hhoytco.uintah.ut.us), Tucker (btuckcrco.uintah.ut.us) and Rulon Dutson (rdutsonbcar-west.com- ). "While it may seem unusual at first and may take some getting used to. using masks will put us in a much better position to help slow the spread of infectious diseases," said Joseph M. Krella, president, Utah Hospital and Health Systems Association. We encourage all visitors to hospitals and health care facilities to ask for a mask if they are experienc ing cold and flu symptoms. In the coming weeks and for the remainder of the cough, cold and flu season, signs and bookmarks will be posted and distributed widely in hospital and doctor's waiting rooms where the sick often expose others to their germs. The signs and bookmarks also reinforce the basics of respiratory etiquette which includes covering your mouth and nose every time you sneeze or cough, placing used tissues into the trash, washing hands well and often with soap and water andor using an alcohol hand sani- Casey W. It is significant to point out that information obtained from concerned citizens who were willing to get involved with the events occurring in the neighborhood proved to be crucial in securing the initial warrant. On Dec. , members of the strike force recovered a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory from the James Allen Ross residence, located at 4346 South Vernal Avenue. Strike Force agents were familiar with Ross, since this is the second clandestine methamphetamine lab confiscated from his residence in the last six months.
