A coin toss which Park City also won broke the tie and gave the Miners the second place seeding in the first round of state play. Uintah will begin state tournament play as the Region 10 third place team this Saturday in St. George. It was a hard fought game, we match up well with Park City, said Lady Ute Coach Tony Cloward. They just got ahead and took it from us. Cloward took the loss in stride and actually thinks the result provided Uintah a good position for the state tournament. The Lady Utes will face North Sanpete as their first opponent in the St. George tournament this Saturday at Snow Canyon High School. North Sanpete has come off the victor in both of the previous preseason meetings, but Cloward was also indulging in a little cat and mouse coaching during their first games. They have a 2 - 0 advantage on us this season, but they also havent seen Jolay, Cloward said. Jolay Guffey is the strong starting pitcher for the Lady Utes. In the early season games, Cloward held Jolay in reserve intentionally hiding her from potential future opponents. She was held exactly for an event like this and Cloward hopes his strategy will catch North Sanpete off guard to give the Lady Utes a leg up going into state play. North Sanpete has a program a lot like ours," Cloward said. We match up well. Losing on a closely matched shootout is not an easy way to end the season," McKeachnie said. The shootout rule is designed to end a tie at the end of regulation play. Each team lines up five players who are each given a shot at the goal from a similar distance. If the score remains knotted, another five players from each squad participate in a second shootout sequence. The Flyers connected on all of their shots while the Utes had a shot stopped by Dixies goal keeper to end the shootout up 5 - 4. The seniors took our loss pretty hard, McKeachnie said.
