AVMC Maeser students read 500,000 minutes The PTA at Maeser Elementary School made a deal with the first and second grade students: if the students could collectively read 500,000 minutes by May 1, the PTA would hold a carnival. The students were each to read 300 minutes each month during the school year. Each time they reached their monthly goal, the students were awarded free tickets for the carnival plus a prize such as a ruler, pencil, eraser or other non-can- item. The overall goal of 500,000 minutes was reached early in March. The carnival was a big hit with these heavy duty readers. They spent their free tickets on bouncers, ball toss games, ring toss games, donuts, pizza and soft drinks. The cool, rainy weather didnt slow the happy youngsters as they celebrated their accomplishment.
