Sf GRANTLAND RICE TF there Is one thing the fight game or the ring game needed above everything else it was the arrival of new faces. Most of the old faces had begun to pall, leaving a depressing effect. The most popular new face seen around the East diana, Tennessee and Ohio are what you might call basic states in regard to American sport. By that I mean such native games as base-sai- l, football, boxing, etc. Racing has a heavy grip on the states that have racing New York, Maryland, Kentucky, Illinois, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, etc. But racing is missing from many states, twenty-fiv- e or thirty, where the scratch sheet and the Racing Form are missing and most of the daily papers give little The Kentucky Derby is third at 14 per cent. 4 The heavyweight championship comes next at 12 per cent. 5 The Olympic Games are fifth, with the Indianapolis Auto Races, the U.S. Open, and the Chicago All-Stfootball game following in NO APOLOGIES er Layne-Marcian- PROBABLY THE BEST COMPLIMENT THAT CAN BE PAIO RAPID ROBERT TODAY IS TO SAY HE HAD POOR SEASONS IN 104849 AND '50. One GI put the attitude very succinctly when he said: No one wants the honor of being the last guy killed in the war. NOT THE LAST KATHLEEN NORRIS The Woman Doesn't Always Pay IS A LETTER from a man HERE to call him that for the moment. Lew Arnold lives in an Arkansas city, and is 43. Some years ago he fell in love with one of the girls in the office, but I did not ask says his my wife for a divorce, letter, because I Jcnew she would refuse me.' The boss always knows that, incidentally. He and this girl, Vera, shortly became lovers, and he says he did everything short of marriage make her position right. Vera evidently a good office worker, she went straight ahead, and promoted steadily. Two years to was for was ago she bore him a son, going to live with an aunt in the country for a year, after which she resumed her office work, now being herself at the head of a smaller office. When the baby was two months old Vera married a young sailor who was dying of anemia in a service hospital giving her baby his name with junior attached. The last few months of her husbands life she nursed him devotedly, and evidently he died satisfied with his bargain. the slightest faith In any promises from Lew. Whether she was fully aware of what she did or not, she has neatly turned the tables on Lew, and I think he deserves being ignored completely from now on. Some other office girl will eventually console Lew, although, being free, he will probably move more warily now. I have no advice at all , for him. This case reminds me of one io sad and so incredible that I feel anger rising whenever I think of it. It began some years ago with a letter from a girl of 20, who wrote me that she was desperately in love with the office boss, whose wife of course never had understood him, but was clinging to him for sheer spite. Francie consoled the boss in his desolate situation, and he rented a small apartment for her. She left a good father and mother and two brothers to suffer the shame of it; she never saw them again. Dangerous Abortion For two years the boss had Francie and Francie had the boss. Then she had a dangerous abortion, for which, she wrote me, Paul paid. And then the unbelievable happened, and the wife of the boss was removed by death. Francie s loving heart couldnt help singing; the way seemed clear now. But Paul didnt see it that way. He wanted a little freedom before he married Francie. Her bloom, he reminded her, had somewhat worn off with illness and tears, and he asked 'hqr to invite various pretty girls up from the office, for dinners which Francie cooked, so that he might look them over. And if any woman cannot believe this, I can only give her my personal word that it is the exact Affair Discovered Vera was satisfied with hers, too, for while she never pretended to feel anything but sympathy and gratitude for the man who had given his name to her baby, she never would have anything to do with Lew again. Lews wife, who was childless learning of the affair and might like to see some of your the baby, did divorce him, and has paintings. so that the way is clear remarried Neil said, "Mothers givYes, Lew for now. ing Grandma Moses a run for her But not for Vera.
