If your time is limited, concentrate only on one aspect of refreshing a room, preferably that which will be most imoprtant in your holiday scheme. If you find you hve more time, then you can apply a new look to one or two more rooms. The best thing about decorating in this way is that' it involves no drastic changes in furniture arrangement or color scheme. Whatever is harmonious to the room as it stands will be in good taste.' ' Cabinets, drawers, chests, ceilings, windows, lampshades, place settings or doors may be used for the tricks youre about to apply. Check the room to see which of these could best stand some face lifting. You may have tucked away in the recesses of the attic some favorite wallpaper, or perhaps you can find it at the store. Attractive wrapping paper, if heavy and durable enough, might also be pressed into service for some of the decora prac-ticall- but not too much. You can then use plain sheer curtains on the windows. A plain dining room table can be used as a base for a runner of large flowers cut out from paper. With a profusion of flowers down the center of the table, about a foot and a half in width, you need not have anything for place mats. The Idea tn using plants is to give them importance with proper grouping and containers. Use plants where its natural to have them, near light, for example. Place them where they wont be knocked off easily. Dont use tall, spiky plants which will hide a nice mirror or pictures. While youre doing the planning, see if you have some nice pieces of glass or china which youd like to display against their new backgrounds. Theyll add new interest to rooms. Perk up Cabinets For New Look Take a critical look at the cabinet you have in your dining or living room, that tall one with the glass doors. If the draperies are plain, select a prominent; color from them and match this in wallpaper. After the papering is done, you can place your prized china or glassware in the cabinet and show it off properly. Old china, milk glass, sparkling crystal or a collection of bottles or old figurines do very nicely against the new colored background. Is your kitchen as colorful as it should be by current standards? Its easy enough to relieve the dead white appearance of cabinets in s this room with decals or from wallpaper. If desired you can run a narrow border near the ceiling of a matching motif. Kitchen cabinets may be decorated all over the surface with small sprigs of strawberries or floral designs; or, if you prefer, place a decal in just opposite corners. Buffet drawers or drawers in the dressing table will be freshened with a lining of wrapping paper or cut-out- wallpaper. Paste this on the bottom as well as the sides of the drawer. If you desire to protect the finish, cut. a piece of plastic or cellophane paper for the bottom of the drawer. Glass-toppe- d tables may also be treated with colorful paper. Cut the paper to fit the top and then set the glass on top of it. There is no need for pasting or attaching the paper in this case. Save Decorating Expense With Partial Papering If your budget does not allow the papering of a whole room, sewhat miracles can be managed with a partial papering Job. This can frequently be done if the original covering on the walls is clean, but old, and needs freshening. A good trick to use in bedrooms is to apply a border near the ceiling, especially if the room is painted in a solid color, or has a paper of no design. You can frequently buy a border of rose garlands to go around the upper part of the walls, and this may do the trick. In other cases, only the ceilhtg need be papered, especially if the one. Patterson MAINTENANCE TO INSURE THE of our government of, for and we should have by the pebple, honest elections by voters legally qualified to express a choice as to policies, parties and candidates. Our elected officials should be the choice of a majority of those legally qualified to express a choice. Regardless of how we as individuals may feel about such a result, we could have no justifiable complaint as long as the result represents a majority of those entitled ' to express a preference. The difference between a majority or minority rule can be and frequently is but a small percentage of the votes cast in any election. One hundred or less fraudulent and illegal votes may change a result. A limited number of such votes could change the policies of onr federal government from that of our American system to that of socialism and Communism; to the radical left, and away from government of, for and by the people. In .all states, voters to! exercise the privilege of voting and having a part in government of, for and by the people,! must register. In a number of states the prescribed methods of registering is much easier than in others, but in all states illegal- registration is possible and is practiced to some extent. At an election in Chicago a few years ago a group of young business men, headed by nenry Pope, Jr., undertook the task of checking the registrations In what are known as the four riverwards. One or more of that -group personally checked every registrant. They called at the address given often It proved to be a factory or warehouse, and in many others the registrant was questioned as to his American citizenship, how long he had lived at the address, and other questions that would prove the legality of his registration. Those young business men challenged and took off the voting lists more than 100,000 names of those who would have cast fraudulent votes in the forthcoming election. U was in no instance a question of who the registrant would vote was entirely the qualifications for; to - t vote in which the interrogator was interested. Under our election system there could be conditions through which that 100,000 fraudulent registrations could nulify the will of a majority of all of those legally entitled to vote in a national election. They could have changed Jhe policies of the nation from what we have known as our American system to that of Socialism and Communism. Undoubtedly the purpose of those who encouraged and connived at such registration hoped for such a result. President Truman is credited with being an exceptionally clever politician. He does not get such a reputation by the apologies he makes but by not creating the necessity or call for apologies. To apologize can not cure all the damage the need for the apology has created. It was a serious political error to rebuke General MacArthur for expressing publicly his views as a soldier on the military value of Formosa. The Presidents attempted softening of that rebuke by making public a letter of commendation to MacArthur did not mend all the political damage the public administration of that rebuke had caused. The public censure of our far eastern commander constituted a costly political blunder. .Another political fox pas on the part of the President were his statements regarding the marines. The people resented such statements, reflecting as they did on that heroic and always popular nnit of onr armed service. The abject apology he puhlicly of-- . fered did not undo all the political damage his unstudied, and disparaging statement had created. Of the same character were his red herring statements he so glb-l-y passed on the investgation of Communistic activities when under investigation by both senate and house committees. Again these statements had to be apologized for when the courts convicted Alger Hiss and other leaders of Communist activities. The Presidents administration has been replete with such incidents that were not to be expected from one cred;ed with being especially astute in the ways of politics. Eltaed by WNU raturi -- |
