At Tooele High School, Dave Spencer was in the jazz ensemble, the symphony, and the marching band. You didnt get to see him play a lot his senior year because he was the drum major, out there in front pumping his baton up and down. "He played in elementary school, junior high school, high school and now college," says his mom. "Hes been playing ever since the fifth grade. He played the trombone to start and then he played the French horn for a while. But hes best at the trombone." It was a natural interest and we fos- - "Performing music has taught me how to work with other people," Spencer says. "Being a four year veteran of the Lagoon show band, I've seen it in peoples faces nearly every day. Working with such an emotional commodity as music creates a common bond among the performers that cant be found in no other organiza- tions." "I think too many band students around the state are too concerned about being good and they miss out on the joys of music. They spend half a year working on the same show over and over trying to reach an ultimate and unachievable standard of portant to us is we knew we had a good sound and we enjoyed putting it out. We enjoyed working with each other and despite the many differences of the people in the organization we had become united in one thing and that was making music. "I have no regrets about leaving my music when I go into the mission field," Spencer says. I've always had a great love for the Tooele band program and I believe the kids who comprise it are capable of accomplishing any- from the Intermountain area.
