To serve their needs, video rental shops are springing up throughout the country. Its a new busines that didn't exist five years ago. So more than ever, let the renter beware. The first thing should do is make sure they rent tapes from a video store they are reasonably sure will be in business next week. reSmall tailers have a difficult time keeping up with consumer demand. It takes a lot of money to keep a videotape stock current and updated. Small retailers have a difficult time keeping up with the constant consumer demand for new titles as well as an extensive backlog of classic tapes. It is possible for a customer to rent a movie, leave the required deposit (usually the full ticket price of the movie, about $40 to $75) and then return the next day to find the business and the deposit gone. That's the main reason to deal with someone who is reputable, who has been in the business awhile and who you know is going to be there next week," said a spokesperson for the Wherehouse, the record store that has become one of the largest video rental companies in the country with 126 stores in six Western states. Other hints: Selection - The depth of inventory should be Number One on your checklist. The perfect video store should have a good catalogue of old titles and a steady supply of new releases. Arthur Morowitz, owner of the 11 Video Shacks on the East Coast (one of the first video rental stores in the country) says, "If had to give one tip to anyone renting videotapes for the first time, I'd say go where you get the biggest selection." Most experts say that at least 2,000 titles is a minimum listing. But stocking that many is not as easy as it sounds. As one small retailer put it, "When a new title is released, its very hot and everyone wants to rent it. Down the road, there is less demand for that title and retailers have to be very careful when it comes to how deeply they buy a particular title. Too many errors in judgment, and youre out of business." l Price stores will charge whatever the traffic will bear. The range of pricing is considerable, from $1 to $6 with no difference in quality or I FIVE-- NEW WORLD VISIONS: AMERICAN ART ANO THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM. 09 MED VIDEO "Hey. 56 MOVe Good Lookin' 0982, Drama) Animated. BIONIC WOMAN Video-renta- service. Why should prices differ so widely? Some stores that rent movies for $1 a title offer either a very small inventory or stock only one copy of the tapes. But dealers say that even a dollar a day can give the large retailer a tidy profit at the end of the week if the store traffic is large enough. Convenience Consumer want to videotapes as quickly and as painlessly locaas possible. Small, tions where you can get in and out quickly are preferable, but only if the selection is large and the prices competitive. Many stores put a limit on the number of tapes a customer can rent. The Wherehouse, for example, limits each customer to four tapes a good policy for us from a standpoint, a spokesperson says). And always make sure you are renting a genuine copy of the tape. Some retailers make copies on their own machines. It is illegal to rent such a copy and the quality is usually inferior to the original. Consumers should look for a manunot only on the box, facturers label but on the cassette itself. Remember: A good selection of legitimate videotape copies at a fair price from a reputable store near your home. These are the main things consumers should be concerned about when it comes to the renting of videotapes. Videotapes. Now that home video may become the primary outlet of our film heritage, it is a pity that in order to compete with television, the motion picture industry came up with the most-wante- d free-standin- g (Its e Cinemascope format. larger-than-lif- e (The Robe first used the wide-scree- n technique in 1953). At best, it is an annoyance when a film is transferred to home video. More often, it destroys the look and feel of a film. In 1956, Mike Todd created a scenic spectacular to woo audiences away TV set. His from the then-nemesi- s "Around The World in 80 Days" boasted 112 natural settings, 140 sets, 32 foreign locations, 11 major studios, more than 40 cameos by the biggest names in entertainment history, Victor Youngs hummable score, and a , which process called filled the theater with sight and sound. For the moment, TV was vanquished. Now, Warner Home Video has restored the nearly three-houoriginal production for the home video screen (it was once reissued to theaters with 30 minutes chopped out) and for the first time in 30 years, we have another chance to look at this spectacle to end all spectacles. Around the World in 80 Days" i (Warner Home Video in Beta Sound or VHS videocassette) offers a lively color print and stupendous home sound voices and music travel across the room as quickly as Phleas Fogg and company make their way around the world. This is the complete version, including the sensational Saul Bass end titles and a musical coda without picture that completed the motion picture theater extravaganza. It's great fun and another reason to enjoy the home video revolution. huge-scree- n Todd-A-O- r Hi-F- five-minut- e |
