He vowed that this year the association will do as much educating about weeds as working to control them. "We will do more of the same things we have done in the past years, but shout a lot louder about it," he said. He suggested working on a supplementary list of potentially bad weeds. It would be supplementary to the 12 weeds now on the Utah Noxious Weed List. Utah weed law requires that property owners clean up any of the noxious weeds that are on their property. Jack Evans, weed researcher at Utah State University, advised that the noxious weed list not be extended too much. He reminded that at one time 36 plants were on that list. Too many weeds on the list made it difficult to handle and detracted from the purpose of encouraging people to clean up those weeds. Evans noted that officials administering federal money to help with weed problems want to put the money where the chances of success with infestations of seriously threatening weeds justifies the program. They lack the means of tackling weeds such as field bindweed (wild morning glory) that exist everywhere in all states across the land. The individual growers will have to deal with weeds such as those. Rich Chase, USU extension weed specialist, said his survey list of potentially bad invading weeds is on the PFS (Personal Filing System) computer program he is making available to the county extension offices. County agents using the computer program and the 1984 Utah Weed Control Guide can advise growers on control of those and other weeds. |
