Show Reflections, May 17, 1984, Page 11 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a new warning about the use of Accutane a very potent drug for severe acne regarding its use by pregnant Specifically, FDA now re- ports 16 cases of birth defects apparently resulting after cutane Ac- was used by women during pregnancy and another 20 cases of spontaneous I FDA also warned that persons Accutane should not donate using blood to prevent the possibility of the blood being given to a pregnant woman. QUESTION: It seems that every time look at magazine pictures of people who live in California, they all to seem nice and thin and skinny me, at least. Is it true people who live in warm climates are generally thinner than people who live in cold climates? Is it because they exercise more? Is there a protective function to fat? ANSWER: Studies since the 1940s show rather consistently that people who live in northern climates are more likely to have more fat, presumably due to a combination of less outdoor exercise in cold climates and an instinctive sense that will help keep them warm. People who live closer to the Equator, on the other hand, are likely to have less of a protective fat layer. There is indeed good evidence that suggests that at least a reasonable amount of fat does help protect against the cold. For example, Japanese pearl divers are often fat even though they are in excellent physical condition; they find such fat useful in protecting them against the cold temperatures of the deep water in which they dive. I women. the The if J; linked to such use. Ever since the drug was first intro- duced, Accutane was thought to have the potential to cause birth defects if taken by a pregnant woman. Now that this possibility has been documented, it is important its use be carefully controlled in women who might become pregnant. Any woman who is to be given the drug should first have a pregnancy test to make sure she is not pregnant - and then she should use a reliable form of contraception to prevent pregnancy while taking the drug. Chip Phillips All The Bounty Does Is Give Bligh A Bad Name The Bounty. Directed by Roger Donaldson. Screenplay by Robert Bolt, based on the book by Richard Hough. Starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. The powers of Hollywood and an un- forgettable performance by Charles Laughton have served to give historys Captail William Bligh a very bad name. While Robert Bolts ( Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago) fine screenplay, adopting the framework of Bligh's l Naval proceedings, doesn't totally exonerate the man, it does do him the justice of humanizing court-martia- him into a fully char- acter. Through Anthony Hopkins excellent portrayal, Bligh is revealed as an expert navigator and a man of great personal ambition, discipline, and sexual restraint (or, if you will, repres- is his intractable demands on his crew and lack of insight into their natures and not blind despotism that eventually orchestrate his downfall. sion). It Fletcher Christian moral complexity and human shadings that take him his strong appeal as a romantic hero. He and Bligh begin as friends, eager to join forces on this somewhat ignoble venture to transfer breadfruit from Tahit to Jamaica as a cheap food source for slaves. Fletcher is the man who can travel in both worlds and it is perhaps for this reason that, when confronted with the sensual exoticism of the paradise Tahiti and a very real love for the native chieftains lovely daughter, he fails so precipitiously away from his skipper's civilization. Blight takes his very much friends to heart, adopting desperate and disruptive measures to reassert his sense of order upon the crew. Fletcher and Blight, each bound by honor, the law, friendship, inner passions, love, discipline, and justice, force themselves into two equally untenable positions. What emerges from the conflict is a compelling, multi layered portrait of the demands of civilization and leadership and the powers of love versus duty. Dino De Laurentiis is to be commended for boldly and wisely en. trusting this massive project to the ex-a tremely capable Roger Donaldson, New Zealand filmmaker with only Sleeping Dogs and the very impressive Smash Palace to his feature film credit. Together, these men have crafted an intimate epic; a film of power and sweep which remains firmly rooted in the human fabric of its grand tale. d perceived-defectio- n Baseball league: abbr. the midst of the sea 3 It commune 4 Novelist Gertrude 5 6 7 8 9 Pollen-bearin- g organ Bathes Candid Triumph Somewhat 16 Schizophrenic condition 17 Writer Gardner 18 24 25 30 32 33 35 37 38 39 40 do-we- Ger. city Seine tributary Cigar ending Championship Ferberbook Dye plants Alights Sewing line great day for... briny 10 Brought into harmony 41 Modem form of 11 42 Kalahari rest Shell-mone- 12 Auspices 13 Compete for office 14 Like a wild animal 15 Refuge whist stops 43 Western 44 Orenburg's river 47 Affectation 49 Old mall caste member 82 Reed players 51 81 Hindu Berle,to friends 52 Impersonator 53 Exhausted 83 Marianne or Melba 84 Cure-al- l 85 Restaurateur 56 Byplay 58 culpa 59 Yowl 61 Of a certain of note church: abbr. 62 Stuffy 63 Chemical suffixes 64 65 66 67 68 69 Mongolian Tex. shrine War god Stock movements Robt.
