Most of outrageous, unpredictable comedian performs his adult nightclub act at Resorts International in ANY facturing the media proclaimed the videodisc dead. Not true at all. RCAs videodisc system may soon be a thing of the past, but the remaining, vastly superior is still videodisc system, the Laser-Disone of the best part of the home video revolution. Although LaserDiscs now grab only a small piece of the home entertainment dollar, LaserDiscs are here to stay because they already have made a tremendous impact in the market where the LaserDiscs interactive format is being used to full advantage. (For example, the Army plans to spend as much as $50 million on LaserDisc training devices for tank gunners.) The LaserDisc uses a laser beam of light to pick up coded signals embedded in the disc surface. Because of this, LaserDiscs last virtually forever. The picture is the sharpest available for the home and its stereosound is as good as most audio components. But it is the interactive capability of LaserDiscs that makes them so exciting. It is here that the machines contwo trols are put to spectacular use audio tracks, slow motion, fast motion, treeze-framsearch and chapter-framto find at random any one of the 54,000 individual frames on a standard disc. And just as the mass media were sounding the death knell for videodiscs, here comes an interactive Laser-Disseries that shows off all of the great potential of this format. Its the first two volumes for home video of the Space Archive series: Space Shuttle: Mission Reports: Sts 5, 6 and 7, Volume One and "Apollo 17: Mission to Taurus Littrow, Volume II." Each disc costs about $40 and contains roughly 1,000 photographs, about 50 minutes of video clips and sound from the spectacular American space missions, and an eight-pagimage directory so you can call up any space picture you want in a matter of seconds. None of spectacular material has been available to the public before. These extraordinary discs are produced by Video Vision, which created a Space Disc series two years ago primarily for schools, universities and professionals. Those six volumes each sell for $320 and contain thousands of photographs directorand extensive printed-imagies (from 80 to 120 pages). They are primarily for educational use, but no home viewer who is fascinated with c, . educational-industrial-recreation- e e c e e outer space will want to miss one frame. For the rest of us, these first two home video volumes at the price are more than enough. Space Archive Series, Vol. 1," contains footage from the space shuttle missions 5, 6 and 7. The picture is as clear a picture as you have ever seen on television. An added bonus is that any of the images that pop on your screen may be purchased as a slide or print. Apollo 17: Mission to Taurus Littrow features the farewell to the moon. The disc even includes a large printed roadmap of the ancient lunar valley of Taurus Littrow as well as more than 1,100 still photographs and more than 50 minutes of video transmissions (including dialogue between the astronauts and the ground crew). Both LaserDiscs are technical achievements of the first order and they make it clear that LaserVision is here to stay, still the most exciting home video component yet invented. Extended play LaserDiscs (CLV) used for movies have recently reduced this powerful random-accesplayer to a simple playback video machine. Yet is is the incredible image storage capacity of the standard LaserDisc (CV) that is ideal for compiling visual data bases of technical or cultural value. The Space Archive discs prove the potential of LaserVision. And that's not all. Laser videodisc interfaces for most computers are already available. Yet consumers should remember that no matter what the hype regarding tapes, the more hours you cram onto each tape, the more likely it is that you will have to settle for an longer-playin- inferior image. For home taping, the most convenient taping time for the best quality is two hours for each Beta tape and 0 VHS.
