Show Camilla Eyring Kimball Chair Of Home-Famil- y Life Inaugurated Brigham Young University President Jeffrey R. Holland officially inaugurated the Camilla Eyring Kimball Chair of Home and Family Life recently, the first endowed chair at the university and, reto be portedly, in the state named in honor of a woman. The announcement was made at a brunch at the Hotel Utah attended by many of Sister Kimballs friends and family members and by university officials and local media representatives. Unfortunately, minutes before the announcement, Sister Kimball suffered a fall in her Hotel Utah apartment, breaking her hip. She was admitted to LDS Hospital and later successfully underwent replacement surgery. "A conscientious student, the mother of four, and wife of a prophet and a daughter of God: Camilla Kimball, throughout her life, has been an example to righteous families, President Holland said. ''The possibilities which the chair will provide for raising the level of our programs at BYU are limited only by our own vision, said Dean Martin Hickman of the BYU College of hip-joi- family-relate- nt d Family, Home and Social Sciences. "Funds contributed to the chair will be used to enhance the family-r- teaching, research and outreach programs at the university, he added. Substantial initial funding for the Kimball Chair was provided by BYU emeritus professor Dr. Virginia Cutler, a nationally- - recognized advocate of family life elated studies. A lifelong supporter of educa- tion and personal development, Camilla Eyring Kimball was born in 1894 in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Edward Christian Eyring and Caroline Cottam Romney. Although she never finished a formal degree, Sister Kimball took advantage of many opportunities to further her education, and, until recently, took a class almost every year of her married life. She has also received the honorary Golden Gleaner Award from the Churchs YWMIA, the Ka Hoa Pono Award from and has been recognized by both BYU and Ricks College as an exSaint woman. emplary Latter-daThe endowed chairs purpose is to honor Sister Kimball for her dedication to the nurturing and perfecting of families, and to provide continuing funds for research and visiting professorships at BYU in the field of family life. Development of the chair is under the direction of committee Dr. Ruth E. Brasher, associate dean of the BYU College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, and Phyllis B. Marriott, past president of American Mothers, Inc., and a former American Mother of ' the Year. Although funding for the chair has not yet been completely developed, official use of the chair and its funds is scheduled to begin winter semester 1983.
