The Utah Symphony will open the concert with Handels Harp Concerto in Major, followed by Bruchs Violin Concerto No. 1. Symphony No. 2 by Brahms will be the concluding work. Violinist Ani Kavafian, born in Istanbul of Armenian parentage, displayed virtuosity in both violin and piano at an early age, winning s the concerto competition at National Music Camp in Inter-lochen- both instruments. Settling ultimately on the violin as her principal mode of musical expression, she has since won the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and the Young Concert Artists International and Philip M. Faucett String Prizes. In the 1970s the young violinist made successful debuts at the Carnegie Recital Hall and Lincoln Centers Alice Tully Hall, and with the New York Philharmonic. The last decade has also seen her first recording ("Ani Kavafian Plays Fritz Kreisler on the Musical Heritage label) and the awarding of a Masters degree with top honors at Juilliard. A former student of Mischa Mischakoff and Ivan Galamian, Miss Kavafian has performed with major orchestras and in recital throughout the United States. Sarah Bullen joined the Utah Symphony as principal harpist in 1981. She has studied with some of the finest harpists of our day -Marcel Grandjany, Mildred Dill-inSusann McDonald and Gloria Agostini - and holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Juilliard, where she won the Naumberg Award for Artistic Achievement and performed as the schools concerto soloist in 4, Alice Tully Hall. She has performed with 17 orchestras and as principal harpist with four. Among her competition honors are first prize in the 1980 Ruth Lorraine Close National Harp Competition. She has performed widely in the United States and Mexico, and on tour to South America and Europe. The Symphony Hall performances on November 5 and 6 are made possible in part by a generous sponsorship donation from the Frank Granato Importing Company. The Marriner S. Eccles Foundation is sponsoring the concert in Ogden on November 4. Tickets for the subscription concerts are available now at the Utah Symphony box office in Symphony Hall, and in Ogden at the Ogden Symphony-Balle- t Association. Regional Fireside Is Scheduled Brian Fetzer, performer, will he the guest speaker at a regional fireside Novemlier 7 at 7:30 p.m. held at the Tooele South Stake Center. The voice of Brian Fetzer is familiar to the radio and television audience though his name may still be somewhat new. He is heard in commercials for everything from spots for the Humane Society of Utah, encouraging kindness to animals to the sleek modem sounds in the Horizon Sound radio campaign, lie has written and produced commercials for the Boys Scouts of America, Heritage Square, The Sound Track, The University of Utah, The Primary Childrens Hospital Festival of the Trees, and " many other radio campaigns. He is heard in the grade schools of our community and surrounding areas singing with thousands of children. He has also performed for the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah State and Snow College. Recently he has appeared as a front act for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Larry Corial. llis music ranges from the humorous to the delightful, through all the spectrum of emotions to the serious and beautiful. One of Brians sons, "Bethlehem Merchant, was arranged by Jay Welch in a classical setting and performed in 1981 ankd 1982 in Symphony Hall with Brian accompanying the chorus and orchestra on the guitar. This prolific writer speaks of the moods, the faces, the feelings, the emotions of our time and may well prove to Ire a significant rising sound.
