GOOD TIP FOR SHADED AREAS IN VOI R CARDEN Quoting from an article in the National Carden Rureau Press Service, "Von may want to dip this article or mule note of this tip and use it next summer." "If von have a shady part of the garden where you would hie to grow vegetables, consider using aluminum foil as a mulch to improve the light intensity. Strips of ordinary kitchen foil can lie used to do this, laying them out along each side of t ie plant row and covering the edges with soil to keep them in place. Aluminum foil can also lie used to ojien areas to keep soil cool for plants, such as lettuce. The foil acts as an insulation, and will keep soil temperature up to 1(1 degrees cooler during the hottest days of summer. Also, it is an effective control against aphids, since aphid colonies dislike the reflected light under leaf surfaces where they breed. Nations 20tli Census Of Agriculture Underway The 1974 Census of Agricul- ; HENRI NOUWEN, ture got underway the week of December 29th with the mailing of approximately four million report forms to farms and ranches in the 50 States according to Vincent P. Barahha, Director of the Bureau of the Census. The Bureau is part of the Department of Commerces Social and Economic Statistics Administration. FARMERS AND ranchers are being asked to report on their agricultural operations during 1974. This 1974 census, the Nations 20th farm census in a series that started in 1840, will update data most recently obtained in 1970 for 1969 operations. Primary emphasis will lie on obtaining information about farms and ranches with sales of $2,500 or more annually. Until 1920 they were taken every ten years; since then, there has lieen one every five years, recently covering years ending in 4 and A NEW KIND OF report form is being usud in the 1974 farm census in order to reduce costs. It is the first time that this type of operation has been used in a Federal census. Also, for the first time, the forms are being mailed out at the third class bulk rate to reduce postage costs. The return envelope containing the farm operators report carries first class postage to protect the confidentiality of the information reported. COMPLETED FORMS are to lie mailed back as soon as possible. Census by mail allows operators to fill out their reports at their convenience and use their farm business records. Estimates are acceptable and should be reported ment of Agriculture. Response to the census is required by law (Title 13, United States Code). By the same law, information furnished on report forms is kept confidential. It may lx; seen only by sworn Census employees and rqjiy He used only for statistical piiqioscs. Even other government agenices cannot obtain or use the report made by any operator. Applicants Sought For Exploration Scholarships I'tah students between the ages of 16 and 21 may apply for a scholarship to participate in field research expeditions this summer. According to Mrs. Jewel Bindrup, Utah State Board of Educations Consultant for Gifted and Talented, the Utah competition is part of the Exploration Scholarship Program. MRS. BINDRUP said that the purpose of the program is to foster the development of gifted youth, challenging them with profound learning experiences in the company of professional scientists. of Child Development in 1973 which provides Federid Day Care Outers for all children zero age to 18. She also stated the 4th Article of the Utah Constitution guarantees the rights of women shall not lx infringed upon due to sex, discrimination, and the woman shall enjoy equally all civil, jxihtical, and religious rights. And she outlined ten guidelines for the defeat of the E.R.A. and requested that all organizations and citizens go to work to stop this unnecessary legislation that would take from women rights they had worked so hard to get. Rax anna Christiansen, representing S.T.O.P. Counseling is the receiving of a story, so that the stranger can enter into his or her own and rediscover his or he past, not to hang on to with a homesick melancholy, but to recognize it as the way that leads him or her to the present and suggests the direction to go. The story can be hard to tell, full of disappointments and frustrations, full of deviations and stagnations, but it is the only story the stranger has. There will be no hope for the future when the past remained unconfessed, unreceived and misunderstood. Quite often our fear for the hidden moments in our own history keeps us paralyzed. The adult lilac birer is a moth which looks like a wasp, hut is closely related to the Peach Tree Ixirer. The larva of this insect is a smail caterpillar which readily Imres into the trees, usually in the area where the major branches attach to the trunk. Control of this insect pest has proved to lie very difficult. Some of our most attractive RIRCII TREES are attacked by the Bronze Birch Ixirer, a colorful tactic whose larvae Ixire holes into the trunk and branches. A dead branch on a birch tree often indicates the presence of this insect which attacks both the white and the River Birch. Elm trees are frequently defoliated by the ravishing feeding of the larvae of the Elm Tree Beetle. The adults are medium small yellow and black stiped leaf licet les. 'The larvae are small, blackish, hairy and wonn-hke- . Boxelder trees are attacked by many kinds of insects. This year the Boxelder leafroller was found on trees in many parts of I'tah and was very damaging to them. Female Boxelder trees are often host Boxelder bugs by the hundreds, creating a nuisance both in and around the home. Maples and Willows arc often infested with hords of aphids which devitalie trees by their feeding on the plant juices with their long, need-likparts. These feeding aphids produce a sticky substance which drips onto anyone or anything which happens to lie under the tree, including people and parked cars. A few of the many other insect pests of shade trees in I'tah communities include the Cooley Spruce Gall aphids which causes the appearance of unsightly galls on Blue Spruce. These galls are formed at the terminal ends of the twigs and are green in the early sumnmer, turning brown bv ruid summer. lax-us- t t lxirers Ixire into the trees and tent caterpillars form unsightly (to us) nests in the branches of many different kinds of shade trees and ornamentals. The large Prionus, which is one of the beetles, bores into maples, willows, poplar and many other trees. In addition to these pests are a whole host of leafrollers and other pests. Ik; sure to take good care of your trees with a gtxxl spray program.
