In the long run, this would be an accomplishment which would dwarf anything man can achieve in outer space. Woody Klein, Housing the Poor, Commonweal. V SWINGING SAFARI OF LAUGHS! Eventually the Babylonians perfected the sundial. Its shadow moved In a curve during the day. Soon man knew he could cut this circle Into segments, and hours came about. But sundials didnt work when there was no sun. The water-docEgyptians Invented the It was a vessel with a hole through which water dripped. People could tell by looking at the water level what time of day lt was. The obvious next step, we learn from r or scholars, was the hourglass. Not until the Middle Ages was the modem timepiece invented, when weights were used for the first time to move the hands around a clock! ace. After that, mechanical progress brought the refinements we know today. A child learning to tell time has no easy task. He accepts our fixed ideas on the twelve-hou-r hour dial and but has trouble adding and subtracting. How can you simplify timetelling? An easy way to teach time . is with crayons," points out . art director June Behling of Whitman Publishing Company of Racine. Wls., leading producers of Juvenile activity items. You can make a clock out of a paper plate, put numbers in crayon, attach hands of cardboard, and show him how they go around. He can have a good time learning to tell time. sixty-minut- e BIGOTRY A review of American history reveals that partakes of many of the same quali-- . ties that are present in any form of prejudice. Lie flat on your back, arms above your head, legs straight in front of you, the bottoms of your feet touching a box of Kleenex tissues. Swing your arms up and forward until they pull you into a sitting position. Then, instead of lying down again, reach forward until your fingertips are over your toes. Grab a tissue with both hands, then uncurl your back until youre in starting position again. Repeat, keeping your feet on the floor. Eat moderately, too, and you can be in shape by summer. Q. I babysit regularly for two families in the neighborhood. Sometimes I like to discuss study assignments with someone else, after the children go to bed. Would it be all right to have a girl friend over once in a while when I babysit? A. While babysitting, your first responsibility is to your clients. Butterworth, had three practices, and following the third practice, Lt. Col. Butterworth expressed satisfaction with the units readiness and stated that he felt confident it would pass the ATT with flying colors. Site of the practice and the actual test is the demolition range at TAD, where the troops live under actual field and combat conditions. The troops use blank ammunition, and included in the maneuvers were simulated chemical attacks using smoke and CS (tear gas) grenades, plus xpe-ciattacks where aggressors attempted to infiltrate the various positions that had leen set up by the troopx. It's all pail of the soldier's training, and every soldier stationed at TAD, takes part in this exercise including clerks, cooks, and mechanics.
