By December the temperature dipped to 53 degrees below and the terrible depressing darkness was enough to drive men mad by its monotony and oppressiveness. In the Polar darkness, Peary started his final drive to the Pole on Sunday, February 28, 1909. Ahead lay treacherous stretches of open water and huge pressure ridges. The expedition moved ahead steadily but slowly in the long Arctic night. They made mistakes, they moved in the wrong direction, they retraced their steps and again forged ahead. By April 5, in the light of the eerie Arctic sun, Peary and his crew realized that they were only thirty miles from the Arctic cap. They had nearly done the impossible. At midnight, with temperatures hovering at fifteen, degrees below zero, another thirty-mil- e run was started the 37th day of continuous sledging. On April 6, 1909, as the annals of Atlantic Mutuals Marine Library show, Peary, Matthew Henson, his Negro second, and four Eskimos reached the top of the world the first men in history to reach the North Pole. The Roosevelt smashed and bucked through the treacherous ice in Kennedy and Robeson Channels, sheltering into winter quarters at Cape Sheridan, on the coast of Grant Land. Supplies would then be sledged ninety miles to the land base at Cape Columbia. From here, the dash to the Pole began. First, a passenger should put personal identification tags or travel stickers on all bags. The most common cause of loss is the look-alibag. Second, place a personal card or identification sticker ' inside each.piece of luggage to insure quidk return if lost or mistakenly, picked up by someone else. WOMEN WANTED Neighbor Ed Hastings defines a modern home as one "where a woman does her preserving in front of a mirror instead of the kitchen stove. There for a spell it looked like Ed was going to give up his comfortable old house on Vine Street and move into a modern home. But the cost of moving was enough to scare him half to death, not to mention the fancy price tags on the ranch-typ- e homes he had looked at. Trouble was that his house looked like an accident about to happen. The roof sagged. And here and there the siding had "un-side- d itself. It got so bad, Ed says, that even the ghost in the attic complained. Work Pays Off Since Ed wouldnt move, his missus made him hire some contractors who specialize in home improvement work. Well, sir, you wouldnt know the old Hastings new shingles and place now siding, spanking new coat of paint, glassed-i- n front porch and a picture window where the big bay window used to be. Funny thing is that the "dont fever swept move, improve down Vine Street. Today theres hardly a house on the block that doesnt look 20 years younger. "Its just a matter of time before 'Ladybird Johnson stops by to thank me for helping to beautify America, says Ed. "Meanwhile, my house is a nice place to sit around in while Im waiting for someone to bring back the family car.
