Because of this, it is wise to learn as much as possible before eating them, said Jerry Goodspeed, Utah State University Extension horticulturist. I was once offered a small pepper, Goodspeed said. After one taste, I knew I had been suckered. This small Thai pepper had enough heat to melt the polar ice caps, and I couldnt get to the drinking fountain fast enough. I have learned a lot about peppers since that day. According to most people, there are only two types of peppers sweet and hot. I add a third type, which I refer to as weapons of These peppers should only be sold with a warning label, said Goodspeed. There is sometimes confusion when it comes to determining which peppers are sweet and which are hot. Sweet peppers are often referred to as bell peppers. However, other peppers are also sweet, he noted. For example, Yellow Banana and Sweet Cherry are both mild, peppers. Another very popular sweet pepper is Gypsy. As a general rule, everything else is a hot pepper. This includes the infamous Jalapeno, Thai Hot, Long Red Cayenne and Habenero. Anaheim and Hungarian Wax are also in this group, but are usually slightly milder than other hot peppers, he said. Peppers are warm season plants related to tomatoes and potatoes. They need to lie planted in the spring after the danger of frost is past. sweet-tastin- g ' LEAMINGTON t - pressurized ir- 934 acres, fulty fenced, access to culinary wa- ? Peppers prefer a warm climate and will struggle in hot temperatures. They can drop blossoms if temperatures stay above 95 degrees for any length of time. This year, pepper growth slowed in July when temperatures reached 100 degrees. However, once temperatures cooled, they continued producing, he said. Not surprisingly, there are few pests that affect peppers. However, one common problem for peppers is blossom end rot, which causes the bottom of the fruit to turn brown and leathery. This is caused by a calcium disorder, said Goodspeed. Use a mulch and a consistent watering pattern to help eliminate this problem. Only the first few fruits of the season are normally affected. Harvest peppers using a knife or scissors to avoid damaging the fruit or the plant. Most sweet peppers are harvested when mature green, just before they turn red. Hot peppers are harvested at different times, depending on the variety, he said. Gardeners who didn't plant 6x6, 6x8 house seconds!
