BLM and Back Country Horsemen partner to support responsible riding During a time when the BLM and other land management agencies sign, fence and patrol public lands to minimize human impacts, a group of back country horsemen in Utah are taking the initiative upon themselves to leave no trace on public lands. The Back Country Horsemen of Utah, a group of 450 riders throughout the state, have partnered with the Bureau of Land Management to keep public lands healthy and open to responsible public use. Drawing upon the organizations members as volunteers, the partnership between the BLM and BCI1U facilitates a number of projects to keep trails clean, campgrounds kept-uand riders responsible. If every citizen took it upon themselves to take care of the resources on public land, our job would be a lot easier, said Utah BLM p Director Sally Wisely. I hope this partnership will be the first of many to keep our lands healthy and clean. The cooperative efforts were officially marked by the agreement signed March 20, 2003; however, BCIIU efforts to improve public lands has dated back to the organizations beginnings in 1993. With the new agreement BCHU is now increasing its communication with land management agencies to develop more conservation projects and education programs. We saw this as an opportunity to further our goals to assist agencies responsible land management and to ensure public lands remain open to recreational pack and stock use, said BCHU president Bill Coon. With this agreement everyfor public one will be working with the same objectives in mind. In the past the volunteers have built campgrounds with restrooms, horse stalls, tent pads and showers; packed out forest camps and outdated equipment in relation to fire fighting efforts; and maintained trails. Through these projects, the members have come to understand the importance of Leaving No Trace on public lands. Under the terms of the agreement, BCHU will work cooperatively with BLM to organize public land projects, educate horseman on environmental protection, conduct visitor and resource surveys and patrol BLM land. BCHU chapters throughout the state are already cussing possible future disproj- ects. These include a proposal for a goodwill rider program in the San Rafael under the new route designation plan, Millcreek Canyon trail maintenance, and a possible horse staging area on the North Oquirrh Mountains. The education aspects of this effort are of extreme importance. When the public knows how to use the land responsibly, it will preserve our ability to use these lands for years to come, said Coon. BCHU hopes to educate riders and other community members on the Leave No Trace" principles by providing informational materi- als and working with the communities of each BCHU chapter. 60 purple and yellow.
