Tbchniques involve use of pumps and specially designed compression devices, such as the Reid Sleeve, developed at Stanford and now available nationally. Compression stockings, which patients can wear throughout the day to gently squeeze out excess fluid, are effective for many patients, Cooke says. Fitting the device to the individual is crucial for success, Cooke notes. Perhaps the most common reason that many treatments fail is that pumps and compression devices have for one reason or another not been fitted properly he says. church. Burial will be in Nephi. Another treatment is massage therapy, which literally pushes the pooled fluid out of the limbs. Massage therapy, combined with special bandaging techniques, is even more effective than pumps and other devices in most ofthe patients we treat, says Cooke. And patient involvement is notes. Special exercises, taught by physical therapists, nurses or physicians familiar with lymphedema, can also help alleviate the suffering caused by lymphedema, says Cooke.
