In addition to this information, we have some flyers and a video about Hantavirus available at the Extension office. HANTAVIRUS PULMONARY SYNDROME (HPS) What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome ? HPS is a rare viral infection of the lungs caused by exposure to rodent droppings or urine. How can you get HPS? You can get HPS by breathing in dust contaminated with virus from rodent droppings and urine. You may also get the disease from a rodent bite. Which rodents carry the disease? It should be assumed that ALL wild rodents carry the disease. The most common carrier is the deer mouse. The deer mouse is one of the most common wild mice and can be found throughout Utah. Deer mice will enter houses and other dwellings in search of food and shelter. What are the symptoms? The most common early symptoms are: FEVER, HEADACHE, MUSCLE ACHES. Other common symptoms are a cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rarely seen symptoms are a runny nose and a sore throat. How soon do symptoms appear? Anywhere from four days to six weeks after exposure. When should you go to your doctor? If you have been exposed to rodents or their droppings in the last six weeks and are experiencing respiratory difficulties you should see your doctor. Can I get the disease from my cat? No, cats can not spread the disease to humans. Owning a cat may eliminate some of the mice around the home. Any mice that are carried in by the cat should be disposed of properly. What can be done to prevent infection? Avoid contact with ro 538-619- 1. Wednesday, November 27, 1996 Bat irabnes m Uttab As of July 1, 1996, Utah has only had two cases of bat rabies. In May, a bat from Utah County was diagnosed with rabies by the Utah State Health Laboratory. This bat, while still alive, was brought home by the family cat resulting in an exposure to the cat and a dog. The bat was placed in a covered glass jar and then taken to school by a family member for show and tell. Through all of this there were no human exposures. The second rabid bat was diagnosed by the Utah State Uni- Most local ordinances allow for quarantine or confinement but few if any will allow the animal to remain under the control of the owner. Several owners have resorted to euthanasia of vaccinated animals rather than force their animal to undergo a y quarantine. In the Utah County case both animals were rabies in Utah is found only in bats, exposures to these animals should be evaluated carefully. According to the 1996 Compendium of Animal Rabies Control, unvaccinated dogs and cats exposed to a rabid animal or a possible rabid animal should be euthanized immediately. Vaccinated dog and cats should be revaccinated immediately following an exposure and then placed under owners control and observation for 45 days. Of those 14 cases, only one was clearly associated with a bite. With the emergence of the bat as an important source for human rabies in this country and the lack of a specific bite history in most cases the following recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was released: because some bat bites may be less severe and therefore more difficult to recognize than bites inflicted by larger mammalian carnivores, rabies postexposure treatment should be considered for any physical contact with bats when bite or mucous membrane contact cannot be excluded. (MMWR, July 1, 1994, Vol. 43, pp. Other states have adopted a much more conservative approach in that if physical contact with the bat cannot be ruled out, rabies postexposure prophylaxis should be given. It is possible to fix appetizing, balanced meals on a lean budget. Turkey is a great buy during the holiday season if you are feeding a large group of people. A small family can dine on chicken priced at about 79 cents to $1.20 a pound. Potatoes are a healthy, inexpensive food to keep in stock. They can add variety to your ta-- budget? ble with many options for preparation such as boiling, baking, mashing and augratin. Pow- dered milk can be used in preparing the potatoes and is less expensive than milk from a carton. Vegetables, such as squash, are nutritious and inexpensive and make a good holiday dish. Pumpkins and apples are also plentiful and inexpensive this time of year and can be used in holiday desserts. Homemade rolls are not expensive but do take time. Another option is to purchase frozen dough. Watch for sales, since it can be frozen for up to several bread months. Stale or day-ol- d mixed with celery and nuts makes a tasty dressing.
