It is not soluble in water, so it remains behind after watering or rain and the effect of Juglone is intensified during a drought. Juglone is also present in walnut leaves and in the hulls. An active, or hot, compost pile will break down the Juglone in a couple of months. In cooler piles, allow walnut debris to decompose for a year. When a walnut tree is removed from the landscape, the Juglone should disappear from the soil within a year. Azaleas, rhododendron and mountain laurel are some of the plants that will not grow well under a walnut tree. Tbmatoes do not tolerate Juglone, and will not grow or produce near walnut trees. There are a number of plants that do not seem to mind Juglone. Among them are: Begonia, Calendula, Morning glory, Violet, Pansy, Ajuga, Astibe, Monarda, Chrysanthemum, Coral bells, Daylily, Hollyhock, Hosta, Lambs ears, Phlox, Primrose, Siberian iris, Stonecrop, Crocus, Daffodil, Tulips (in fact bulbs are not bothered by Juglone) Clem- atis, Forsythia, Honeysuckle, Virginia Creeper, as well as Ken- tucky Blue Grass. As for vegetables, beets, beans, and onions do well. There are others, but these are the most common. Walnut trees are late to leaf out in the spring and among the first to lose foliage in the fall. They are deep rooted trees, but the roots spread widely, up to one and a half times as wide as the tree is tall. If you seem to have an area where your plants do not do well, check to see if your neighbor has a walnut tree.
