Home computer users may find the 1040PC program a preferred way to file. The 1040PC program is included in various tax preparation software packag-es, which are available in many software stores. IRS expects about 16 million individuals to file electronically this year. In previous years, electronically filed returns contained fewer errors and were easier to process. IRS says it plans to have volunteer tax help available at nearly 150 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) sites throughout Utah. Some volunteer sites will offer free electronic filing for low income taxpayers. If you compare the $65cwt. breakeven price to current live cattle futures prices, you see that profitable contracting opportunities are available to the operator during the first quarter of 1996 but not into next summer. So, it makes economic sense to buy yearlings to place on feed now rather than calves. The number of feeder cattle outside feedlots is now 3 higher than it was during the same period in 1995. Low feeder cattle prices have provided incentives for cowcalf operators and others to retain ownership or buy calves to pasture on background through this winter. This suggests that adequate numbers of yearling steers and heifers will be available to be placed on feed during 1996. This will place some pressure on yearling prices during the first part of 1996 and, as these cattle are placed on feed, will contribute to bringing rather large increases in beef production during the last half of 1996, Bailey and Nielsen say. sage. Call 911 if she has a weak cough, is losing color or cannot breathe. They predict that much of what happens to cattle prices during the coming year depends on feed costs. High corn and barley prices during 1995 will provide an incentive to greatly ex-- , pand feed grain acreage in the coming year. If adequate moisture is received, a large feed grain crop will result. However, if drought conditions during 1996 are severe enough to significantly reduce feed grain yields and hurt pasture conditions, there will be severe pressure on cattle prices which are already low. Our projections follow closely the prices being offered on live cattle futures contracts. Profitable contracting opportunities for fed cattle appear to be available during the first three to four months of 1996 with a sharp decline in prices during the second half of the year. Cattle feeders should watch weather conditions in the Midwest during this winter and early spring to determine if 1996 will be a more normal crop year than 1995. Opportunities to purchase yearlings at good prices may also present themselves as spring and summer approach. If yearling prices do weaken during the first half of 1996, this may improve the profit outlook for cattle bought as yearlings during the first part of 1996 and sold for slaughter during the second half of 1996. |
