Sunday, February 4, 1996, marked the 150 year anniversary of the start of the exodus of 10,000 Mormon Pioneers from Nauvoo, Illinois, across the Mississippi River into Southern Iowa. Long before the days of cellular phones and Mormon families hastily packed their belongings into covered farm wagons and ferried across the Mississippi River, to flee pressures from the local and federal governments. Because the pioneers made an departure, they faced the worst part of winter. By February 26, 1846, the Mississippi became frozen, so people and animals could walk across it. Tramping in the snow or deep mud alongside a covered wagon in leather shoes and cloth pants or long skirts makes some modern-day stories of vehicles stuck bumper-to-bump- earlier-than-plann- ed er in snow pale in comparison, says Max J. Evans, Division of State History Director. n poet and wife of Well-know- Mormon prophet Brigham Young, Eliza R. Snow, wrote on February 13, 1846: I was in- formed that on the first night of the encampment of those who preceded us, nine children were ushered into the world, and from that time, as we journeyed, mothers gave birth to offspring under almost every variety of except those to which they had been accustomed in tents and wagons in rainstorms, and in snowstorms. When were complaining about shoveling snow, it might help to think about the sacrifices that Utahs early settlers made to come here and to create the beautiful state in which we live, said Evans. The Mormon pioneer movement was in two segments; the first trek in 1846 was 265 miles across Iowa to the Missouri River, and the second 1,032 miles from Winter Quarters to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Clean snow and ice from meter The Nephi City gas department has had several calls to houses reporting no gas appliances working. This has been a particular problem during this last weeks very cold weather. Once again we are trying to inform our customers of this potential problem and how to solve it. Proper and safe functioning of natural gas meters and regulators can be affected by ice result- ing from water dripping onto the meters from building roofs. Please check your meter location, and if water from a building roof or other source can land directly on the meter set, contact the gas department for suggestions about how to protect your meter location. South First Baptist Church Today let us look at the sixth Beatitude from the Sermon on the Mount. It is our second un- der the idea of our Attitude Towards Others. Last month we looked at the principle of Mercy others. This month it is a Pure Heart Towards Others. JESUS SAYS THERE IS GREAT BLISS WHEN OUR MOTIVES ARE SINGULAR IN ORIGIN: This Beati- tude, as with all the oth- ers, requires a strict self-examination. The word the Lord uses for 'pure has many usages in the language, all con- - tributing to what the Lord is saying. It origi- - nally meant to be clean as in our clothes being clean not soiled. It was also used in reference to com that had been win- nowed or sifted and all impurities removed, Another use was for metals that were free from alloys. This is the first step in anyones life in order to be able to see God. We are bom with a darkened or stained with sin and impreg- nated with sinful tendencies. Psa. 51:5, Be- hold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did Since the time of my mother conceive me. Adams sin, we are all bom sinners as part of the curse of mankind. Rom. 5:1, Wherefore , as by one man Adam sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all for that all have sinned ; We must be win- purified from the tainting effects of sin our hearts. Sin brings death, but faith in Jesus brings eternal life. Joh. 5:24, Verily, ver- ily, I say unto you. He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath ever- lasting life, and shall not come into condemna- tion; but is passed from death unto life. When our whole faith is placed in Jesus we are cleansed from our sins by His precious blood. 1 Joh. 1:7, But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. Remember, Jesus is address-towar- d ing believers, those already saved by grace through faith, therefore He is zeroing-i- n on our motivation for good works as a Christian. We know from Gods Word that until one is saved, his works are an abomination to God. Isa. 64:6, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Jesus is saying that our motives are to be unmixed, unadulterated by d self. We are not to be in our tion, but pure. Why? From the rich soil of a pure heart grows a stable and faithful service for the Lord. JESUS SAID ONLY THOSE WHO ARE PURE IN HEART WILL SEE GOD. Most of the time we see only what we want to see. A botanist walking in the mountains will see things and appreciate them much differently than others. There are those who always look at or perceive things in a wicked way, twisting innocent statements or acts into ones with moral connotations. Jesus says only those whose hearts are pure have pure thoughts and actions. They will see things in the light of Gods Word. Psa. 19:8, The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Jesus tells us in Joh. 1 7:1 7 that Gods Word is truth. Those who are saved and welcoming the Spirits lead-meing through Gods Word in their lives, are stantly winnowing, constantly refining, and n ways asking God to purge and cleanse them. Those are the pure in heart and the only ones who will see God.
