Grants of up to $250 may be made to organizations or individuals for projects relating to the Gunnison Expedition of 1853. Any format that will increase public understanding of the expedition is eligible histories, artwork, memorials, teaching materials, or public programs. The Gunnison Expedition was commissioned to explore for a central railroad route from the Missouri River to the Pacific xoast through Utah Territory. iThe survey party, led by Captain XJohn Williams Gunnison, was v killed near present-da- y Delta by a group of Pahvant Indians as retribution for the murder of their chief by a white immigrant wagon train. In 1994, the Fieldings praised the work of the late Stanley A. Houghton, who designed and arranged for the installation of a monument at the massacre site. Houghton spent years studying Gunnisons journals, tracing his route, and locating and mapping out the campsites. Much of Houghtons work is available for study at the Great Basin Museum in Delta. The Utah Humanities Council (UHC) is an independent nonprofit agency and is Utahs state affiliate to the National Endowment for the Humanities. All humanities project proposals are reviewed by a volunteer Board of Directors representing all parts of the state and the many disciplines of the humanities. UHC Board member Carol OConnor, professor of history at Utah State University, will oversee Gunnison projects.
