Show t On 1872 mining law The facts add up! I Sit " the Editor: In regards to last weeks attack on Mayor Bob Steele, it is obvious after reading Mr. Halls letter to the editor that he has done some research on the mining law of 1872, but did he get all the facts? Does he know of all the requirements, restrictions, and costs before patenting a To By Allan R. Gibson Well all the excitement of the primary election is past. The voters have had their say and Gordon Young is the choice of the Republican party to run against Jim Garrett in November. Congratulations to Mr. Young. The interest in the primary election has been exciting this year but I am glad the election is over for a little while. At least on a local level we will probably find it quiet until mid October. The dedication of the Juab County DUP MuseumMultipurpose center was nice on Saturday. Everyone did a nice job. They held tours of the facility but if you didnt get to go, you should plan on doing so in the future. Special Service District One is going to have a contest in the future to come up with a name for the building. Be thinking about it. My suggestion is the Evelyn Lomax Center. Mrs. Lomax has been one of the guiding lights behind the center since the inception and my vote goes for her. Didnt get a call personally, but I hear there has been a firm calling around town promising free trips. They have been asking for Social Security numbers when they call to verify the identify of the lucky winner. Sounds like a scam to me. It has been reported to the Social Security Administration and the local cops. If they call you, just remember the old saying If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Heard over at as the clerks were putting out the orange hunti ng hats. How many of those hats do you have? one clerk said. The orange horney ones? was the reply. Then laughter. I dont know how horney a hat can be but I bet they sell fast. arg 4-- D Thanks to all those who voted for me in the Primary Election! appreciate your support. I Gordon M. Young INDXDSIR claim? If you look at the overall cost of one patented mining claim, in my opinion, it is some of the most expensive ground in the U.S.A. Minerals first have to be found. The average prospector Si Wfi mni Ir federal government. The government is in the process of raising its yearly $10 fee to $100 per year. The assessment work lots of sampling, testing, and road costs thousands of building I might add that and dollars, do cannot anything without you first obtaining an expensive reclamation bond. You cannot dig holes or make roads without the bond. North Lillie Mining Company spent thousands of dollars last year on reclamation bonds to move old mine dumps on patented ground! The $100 assessment per year per claim is only a minimum. Most claim owners know that if they want any results, they have to do lots of ore testing. Each of these tests can run $500 and up. Depending on the complexity of the tests and and the values they are testing for, they can and in most cases do go on for years before finding aU the ore can spend many years and thousands of dollars looking for one vein of ore rich enough to prove of good economic value, unless he is lucky enough to stumble over it the first day. Once you find it, you have to place a discovery marker on the site and then stake it. Depending on the terrain, that sometimes can take days or weeks. Then you have to file your claim with the recorders value. Then you have to have a office and the Bureau of Land which costs geology report done, which also $17 Management, costs thousands of dollars. This tells the overlooked the requirements volume of the ore and also rebetween filing and patenting. quires more assay tests and adds to proving of economic feasibility. Then you need to have a claim survey done. This can cost $1,000 or more for one claim, depending on the terrain and the availabiltiy of section comers. Patent surveys cost a minimum of $500 per claim. This all has to be done before the federal government will even consider giving a patent on a claim, and I know I havent covered everything. 0 n And now, after all is done, you still have to begin production of the ore, which easily can run into millions of dollars to move the first ton into production.
