Or like the rest of us, you can take a more active role in conserving gasoline with improved car maintenance and driving techniques. Here are some tips: Changing engine oil. Both the oil and the oil filter should be changed at least as often as your owners manual recommends. You might want to change earlier based on the kind of driving you do. When your vehicles oil gets dirty (you cant always tell by what you see on the dipstick), the additives are depleted and you will experience higher fuel consumption and shortened engine life. I like to change oil every 3,000 miles for city driving, and every 4,000 miles for highway driving. Tire pressure. For best fuel economy, use the maximum pressure as stated on the sidewall of the tire. Tires that are underinflated have greater rolling resistance because more of the tires surface is in contact with the road. If your tires are supposed to be at 32 pounds and you find each of them is at 30 pounds, you probably are losing about 5 percent of your efficien-cy- . Tire selection. Where possible, use radial tires. They can improve your mileage from 5 to 10 percent over bias-pltires. They tend to last longer, too. Selecting gasoline. If your vehicle takes regular leaded or unleaded gasoline and doesnt knock, dont use premium gasoline. Eliminate extra weight. Have you still got a bucket or a bag of sand in your trunk for winter emergencies? Does your husband or wife leave their golf clubs in the back of the van just in case? The typical family wagon probably has one mile per gallon of extra junk riding around all the time. Carpool or ride the bus. If you have the opportunity to or ride the bus, even once a week, you could reduce your fuel costs by 15 to 20 percent. Avoid long warmup idling. Save fuel by limiting your warmups to 30 seconds. That is long enough to get oil circulating in your engine. Its best to drive moderately for the first mile or two. car-po- Accelerated ol -- f moderately. When pulling away from a stop, you use about three times as much fuel as you do when driving down the road. You should accelerate at a moderate, steady rate. If you accelerate too gently, your transmission does not get into a higher, more gear soon enough. If you accelerate too fast, you dump more gasoline into your engine that it effectively can bum. Walk or ride your bike. This could be the biggest savings of all. In addition to saving fuel, you could be making the time to get that exercise you have been fuel-efficie- nt putting off. With careful driving and a little extra care, the savings you enjoy should be enough to compensate for the gasoline price hikes you can expect over the summer holidays.
