Warm weather brings out the bugs Unseasonably warm temperatures have brought the spring inmgs out en masse this year, ash attack cluding borers that trees and lilacs. Insects grow and develop when temperatures are right for plants to grow, says Larry A. Sagers, USU Extension If this were not the case, the insects would not have a food supply and would not survive the climatic extremes of nature. It is unfortunate that some insects seem so intent on destroying those trees and shrubs we enjoy so much, said Sagers. One particularly troublesome pest is the lilac borer, erroneously called ash borer in Northern Utah. While there is an ash borer, Sagers said it does not occur here. Even more confusing is that the lilac borer attacks the ash trees. These trees normally are very tough trees that withstand alkaline soils, dry climates, and hot temperatures. The wood is hard and resistant to storm breakage. Unfortunately, the lilac borer invaded the state and changed the ash from one of Utahs best trees to a tree that requires yearly attention to survive and flourish, said Sagers. The ash borer actually is a clear-winge- d Bob and Evelyn without Planned Savings Plus. moth that borer. resembles the peach-tre- e The female lays its eggs on the trunk or larger branches, but the preferred site seems to be where the branches join the main trunk. The insects then hatch, burrow underneath the bark, and live for the next year eating on the wood of the tree. In April of the following year, the insect emerges and mates, starting the cycle over again, says Sagers. Preventing the insects from getting into the tree is the only successful method of control. Controls must be timed precisely to destroy the pest before it invades the tree, says Sagers. Timing these sprays is based on pheromone traps which attract the male moth to determine when the peak flights are occurring. Once the traps begin catching the ash borers, homeowners have only seven days to apply sprays for the most effective control. Spray the trunk .and main branch areas of the trees, making sure you do so prior to the time the insects reinfest the tree. Thorough coverage of these areas is essential, but Sagers said sprays on the leaves and twigs are not needed. On lilacs, the insect bores near the base of thd stem about six inches off the ground. Once again, the stem is killed by the feeding of the Fortunately, the pest only attacks lilac wood that is four years old and up, said Sagers. Consequently, a good renewal pruning program that removes the older wood eliminates the need for spraying, unless the shrub is trimmed to a lilac tree with a single trunk. |
