Because of the possibility of contracting rabies, bats should not be handled without gloves or other protection. Children should be taught not to touch dead bats or to attempt to capture live animals. When dead bats are found, they should be buried or burned If a person is bitten or scratched by a bat, they should wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and immediately contact a physician and the local health department.
