In 1926 a community park and playground was establish- Hi ed between the Nephi High School and the Central School. Plans called for the erection of playground equipment and the planting of lawn (The Times-NewMarch 12, 1926). This was accomplished and a band stand was also built. When the swimming pool was built in the area, the park was sacrificed to make room. s, In the thirties, the north square, located on Main street between Fifth and Sixth North, was bought by Nephi City for Juab School District and turned over to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers to make into a beautiful Pioneer Memorial park. This they did, planting a tree for each of the first seventeen families and beautifying the park with flowers and shrubs (personal interview with Amy O. We know the problem in Utah better than they do in Washington and more restrictions by the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management are not the answer, he said. The Congressman said he has been told that the President will outline his decision during an environmental policy speech early in May. Speaking before the Six County Economic Development District at Mickelsons Cafe in Nephi on April 15, the Utah Republican said that though an extension of existing regulations is being proposed by the Council on Environmental Quality and considered by President Carter, it would be limited to seriously damaged areas and would be seasonal. What we need to worry about is not a general ban, it's more oppressed by the bureaucracy, he said. He added, A blanket ban is not a real threat right now, but the growth of the fourth branch of government the federal bureaucracy is. W. McCune, a millionare of Salt Lake City and a native of Nephi, gave one thousand dollars for the improvement of the Nephi City cemetery as a memorial to his wife, Elizabeth Claridge McCune, who had just been buried there (Ibid, p. 294). Highways As automobiles increased, the need for highways became apparent and the various cities vied with each other for the State Highway.
