School rodeo being held this week end at the Ute Stampede arena at the Juab County Fairgrounds. Approximately 200 are signed to participate. the Juab Rodeo Club, left and Justin Winn, reporter display placard ad vertising the second annual High With more than 200 young people from high schools throughout the state signed up the second annual Juab High School rodeo is scheduled to be one of the largest ever held in this area of the stake. The sign-u- p list is so great '! ! I 1 s i for Meo that an extra rodeo will be conducted in order to provide participation. Dale Jackson, president of the Juab Rodeo Club, stated Tuesday that with the flood of entries, the extra participation rodeo will be Saturday at 12 noon. Regular performances have been scheduled for Friday evening and Saturday evening starting at 7 p.m. We appreciate the support we have received from members of the Ute Stampede committee, and the business men and women of Nephi Dale stated. Now, we invite the support of everyone in attendance at the rodeo, so it will be a great success. Several members of the Juab Rodeo club attended and particiapted in the rodeo at Delta earlier this month, with Chris Yates placing third in the goat tying, and David Worwood and Jerry Kendall placing second in the teom ropOthers participating were Dale ing. Donald Reid to Receive Master Degree at Y Rites M I Elder Craig Worthington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Worthington who returned home recently after commission for the pleting a two-yeChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Elder Worthington served in Idaho and Monana. He will give a report of his mission at the Nephl Second Ward sacrament meeting on Sunday, May 21, starting at 7 p.m. at the Juab Stake House. Bishop R. Clark Greenhalgh urges all members of the ward to attend. ar Donald Reid will receive his master of science degree in physical education, with a minor in recreation, at the Brigham Young University on Friday May 26 Mr. Reid graduated from BYU with a bachelor of science degree in physical education and a minor in driver education in 1964. He was coach at South Summit High School in Kamas until 1967 when he accepted the position as basketball and baseball coach at Juab High School. Juab High School broke a long tradition as they beat Manti for the region tennis title last Thursday. Manti has won this honor for the past 16 yean and this is the fint time this title has come to Juab. Participants for the Juab team were David Wilkey, David Tolley Danny Warner, Craig Sperry, Bevan Orme and Kim Sperry. All team members worked together to bring this trophy to Juab. For winning this honor the region presented the team with a big trophy to plac in the local high school. At the awards assembly held Monday, David Wilkey, team captain, presented this trophy to the school for placement in the trophy case. This Saturday, the Juab team will participate in the state meet at Provo. Here they will be meeting the top teams from throughout the state, and should prove to be quite a battle for the Wasps. For his great job in tennis, David Wilkey has been awarded a tennis scholarship to Dixie College. David will also be on a work-stud- y program which will enable him to teach tennis to freshmen students at the college. Marriage licenses issued by the Juab County Clerk during the past week include: May 10, to Charles Lee Sperry, and LuDean Woodward Talbot, both of Nephi; May 15, to Ralph Glen Wilson, Nephi and Ramona Naomi Bendixen Hoyt, Levan; on May 11 to Alvin F. Stang, Lynndyl and Gertrude Merservy Holmes, Provo. Mona Area News Seeking his third term in the Utah Senate, Dr. G. Stanford Rees has filed as a Republican candidate for the four year term as senator from District 29, which includes Juab, Millard, Sanpete, Sevier, Wayne and Piute cvounties. Dr. Rees, a resident of Gunnison, served one term as Senator from Sanpete county, then following reapportionment in 1966 was elected to serve Millard, Sanpete adn Eeaver counties for four years. Bom at Scipio, Dr. Rees attended elementary and high schools at Nephi, and graduated from the University of Utah. He received his Doctors degree from the University of Pennsylvania and has practiced in Gunnison since 1932. Cary G. Peterson, East Juab County farmer and formerly music director of Juab High School, filed for the Republican nomination as State Representative from District 71, embracing Juab and Millard Counties and the southern portion of Utah County. Mr. Peterson, husband of the former Renee Painter, is past president of the Kiwanis Club of Nephi, and has been an officer in the Livestock Association. He was Sunday sustained as a member of the Juab Stake High Council. He has served many years as a member of the Sunday School Stake Board and has served in other positions. Mr. Peterson was defeated for the position of State Representative from area two yean ago. the Juab-Millard Mrs. Rex Jackson and son DelRay and Martin of St. George were visitors for two days last week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Orgill. Other guests at the Orgill home during the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Keith Anderson and son Rodger of Hunter. Dinner guests on Mothers day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alger E. American Leglan Auxiliary Names Mrs. Mickelson Head Al-li- Eth-ely- Two Named to USU Honor Roll Two students from Nephi were on the winter quarter honor roll at Utah State University, according to word this week from Dr. Claude J. Burtenshaw, vice president for student affairs. Named to the honor list were Ronald Jay Dailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Dailey, and Brenda Boswell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph O. Boswell. Primary Clinic Scheduled The Primary Childrens Hospital will hold a mobile clinic at the ML Pleasant LDS Hospital at 9:30 a.m. on June 30 Dr. T. E. Bauman will be present. Nephi Area News Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Jarrett and daughter Ann, and Mrs. Jarretts parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paxton of Salt Lake City, and The Agriculture Mechanics team from Nebo chapter, Future Farmers of America, won first place in the state F.F-mechanics contest held at Utah State University In Logan last Friday. The contest was a different type from the contest held in past years, and the winners will attend the first national contest to be held in connection with the National F.F.A. convention in Kansas City, Missouri next October. This is the sixth year in succession that the teams from the local chapter has won the contest, and nine of the past ten years. This is the best record any school in the state has ever had in any FFA contest Members of the winnnig team are Dale Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell H. Jackson; John Orme son of Mr. and Mrs. Max L. Orme, and Terry Haney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Haney. Dale also received the second place individual award. Dr. Von H. Jarrett formerly of Nephi, and professor of agriculture education, Utah State University, was in charge of the contest The crops and land team placed third in the state contest the largest held since the contest was started. Third is the highest a local team has placed. Team members are Tracy Olsen, Mike Baxter and Mark Williams. Alternates were Chris Neilsen, Gordon Young and Raymond Young. The livestock judging team placed sixth in that competition. Team members are LaMonte Dansie, Kerry Kates and Brent Dailey. The teams in all contests were rated gold, blue and red. The above teams all received the gold, or first, award. The dairy cattle team composed of LaMonte Dansie, Kerry Yates and Mike Baxter received the blue or second award. Mrs. Thalia Mickelson was elected and installed as president of the American Legion Auxiliary at a meeting held at the home of Mrs. Norma Jenkins on May 10. She will succeed Mrs. Betty Anderson in the position. Mrs. Anderson presided and conducted the meeting. Invocation was given by Mrs. Viola Ockey. Mrs. Marie Butler led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Peterson, Rees File for State Positions Several weeks ago, a Nephi gentleman who preferred to be known only as The Scotchman offered a $25.00 prize to the student of Juab High School who best told of his appreciation of an activity which took place in the Juab County Court room wherein the workings of the Court and of law were taught The Scotchman proved that he was a generaous Scotchman this week when he awarded three extra prizes, bringing to $40.00 his appreciation gift David Paxman, son of President and Mrs. Vaughn J. Paxman, was awarded first prize of $25.00 for his essay on the activity, and additional prizes of $5.00 each went to Shirleen Kendall, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Kendall; JoDene Menlove daughter of Superintendent and Mrs. Ralph W. Stake Aaronic Priesthool committee members remind all that they should be at the Cave area and have their evening meal completed so that they may attend a program at 8:15. Sherwood, Mayor of Nephi, in proclaiming Saturday as Poppy Day in Nephi. Mayor Sherwood continued: By accepting and wearing a poppy we aid the living victims of the past wars, while also honoring our war dead Members of the American Legion Auxiliary, with volunteers, will bedis tributing the poppies throughou the community on Poppy Day. Money contributed in exchange for the poppies aid disabled veterans and familes, and the families of deceased servicemen. Understanding the character and purpose of Poppy Day I am sure thae each uf us will consider it a privilege to wear a Poppy on Saturday Mayor Sherwood concluded. Son of Nephi lady Honored For Rupert Accomplishments Charles (Chuck) Sidwell, son of Mrs. Isabel Carter erf Nephi, and manager of the J. C. Penney Company store at Rupert, Idaho received a $150.00 check presented to him in recognition of his stores accomplishments. The Rupert store won the Presidents cup award for meeting the companys sales goal, profit achievemenL The Ruplan and over-a- ll pert store had the highest percentage points over 20 stores in the district, including stores in Idaho Wyoming and Utah. |
