Anyway, come Sunday morning along about 2 a.m., the clocks of the nation will be placed ahead an hour . . and we wont gain back the hour of sleep until next fall! To the farming population, daylight saving time is a lot of bunk! Most of the gentlemen who work with the soil and crops and livestock work from sun to sun and then dont get everything accomplished they would like to during the day. Many businessmen also are on but the daythe job early and late light saving time will give many an opportunity once in a while to enjoy the longer evenings most of us And there are those who eat by the clock to such an extent that we can almost tell the time by hunger and craving for dinner. Control of the stomach acids which start to act up at dinner time will be a most knawing problem! Susan resided in Nephi with her parents while her father, John Hershey, was employed at Thermoid Company. The letter states, in part . . . after six happy years there we moved away. Thirteen years have passed since then, . . . and recently, while going through some of my mothers treasures I found a poem she wrote when we left the "Friendly City. Susan goes on to tell what each member of the family is doing and states: My husband is empoyed locally, and I work as a bookkeeper for the Exchange Store. We have a son, Sam, who Is in the first grade. which the gem Here is the poem Jane Hershey so graphically expressed thoughts concerning Nephi: THE FRIENDLY CITY We still miss Mt Nebo and the Red Cliffs on high. We still miss the canyons, clear heavens and sky. We still miss Dog Valley, flat desert and dust. And thanks, Jane, for your delightful thoughts! reg They tell me . . . that it is estimated that there will be in excess of 1700 cases of child abuse and neglect referred to the Juvenile Courts . . and many additional cases will be investigated by the Division and not referred to the court This is a mighty lot of crimes among we Utah people who are supposed to be living model lives! Perhaps the specialists know all the answers as to why child neglect and child abuse goes on. Sure there's punishment spankings, but child abuse is another thing! Even the threat to a child 'that Til beat you! is far out of line as far as I can see! What could possibly enter the heads of parents which would cause them to abuse a baby or a youngster? Social workers will be immediately available to provide services as the situation dictates, and if the problem cannot be resolved within the home any child in danger will be placed in shelter care for protection. We hope there are NO CASES of child abuse or neglect occouring in this area! Weather Report . White Crosses to Note Veterans Graves White crosses constructed by members of the American Legion will be displayed in plots at each of four cemeteries in East Juab County: Levan Cemetery, Mona Cemetery, Vine Bluff and Neph City Cemeteries in Nephi. In past years, the American Legion posts have placed a flag on each grave of veterans of the wars. This year, the Post representatives have made a cross for each veteran which will be placed in the Legion plot in each cemetery. The crosses will be placed on Friday just prior to Memorial Day, with flags to be placed on Sunday and Monday. A total of 35 crosses and flags will be placed in Nephi City cemetery, 92 in Vine Bluff, 22 in Mona and 28 in Levan. No flags will be placed on individual graves as in the past Those with veterans buried in either of the cemeteries as well as the general public may visit the full display in the cemeteries. Jones, son of Mr. and Alma Jones, recently was graduated from basic training at Fort Polk, La. He has been visiting with his family and friends during the past week. He left Sunday for Fort Carson, Colorado for further training. Event for Saturday, May 6 Plans are being completed by the Juab Stake Relief Society and Board for an outstanding evening on May 6 at the Juab Stake House. All Relief Society ladies of the stake are invited to attend the special event. Mrs. Blanche B. Brough, Relief Society stake president stated that the evening will consist of a special film, musical selections and refreshments. Mona Man on Winter Quarter Honor Roll at Utah State Thomas J. Young of Mona, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Young, has been named to the winter quarter honor roll at Utah State University, according to information announced recently by Dr. Claude J. Burtenshaw, vice president for student affairs. Mr. Young is enrolled in the school of agricultural and irrigation engineering. Mrs. Glen Belliston and daughter Ruth Ann recently visited in Upland, California with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Belliston. - . NEPHI STATION Date April 24 LEVAN STATION Date April 19 April 20 April 21 3 Invite White Cane Purchase Saturday will be White Cane Day in Nephi, under sponsorship of the Nephi Lions Club. Annually, Lions Clubs in Utah sell the miniature white canes to assist in sight conservation and aid to the blind projects. A portion of funds received from the sale of the canes is used locally to assist in sight conservation, and the remainder is contributed for state-wid- e projects and aid to the blind. This year, funds over amount will go the locally-neede- d to the Sight Conservation division of the Primary Childrens Hospital. DeLoye Anderson, project chairman for the Nephi Lions Club, said that the canes will be sold by all members of the club throughout Saturday of this week, and he invited and urged support of this very worthwhile project. Selective Service Clarifies Registration Law Day is set aside May 1 each year by joint resolution of Congress and Presidential proclamation as a special day of celebration by the American people in appreciation of their liberties and as an occasion for dededication to ideals of equality and justice under law. The annual nationwide event is not a lawyers day," but rather an occasion for honoring the place of law in our lives, for learning how the law and our legal system operates, and for examining how the law can better serve our people and nation. In Utah this May 1, special discussions will take place in high schools throughout the state, including Juab High School at Nephi. Naturalization ceremonies in the Utah Supreme Court Chambers will be conducted for all persons qualifying for U. S. citizenship in In Salt Lake City, the annual Utah. Law Day luncheon will be held at the Fort Douglas Country Club with Professor F. Hodge ONeal, former dean of the Duke University Law School, as the special speaker. Mary Lou Ewell Named The Selective Service System announced recently that there are new registration procdures for the draft Under the new provisions, a registrant must register with a draft board or a draft registrar within the period 30 days before or up to 30 days after his 18th birthday. He must bring some official type of identification with him when re registers, such as his birth certificate, Social Security account number card, drivers license, school or college activity card. The new registration procedures are designed to make registration more registrant-oriented adn draft board operations more streamlined. In addition to completing a Registration card, a new registrant also must fill out a registration questionnaire. The registration questionnaire has been revised recently ,and now requires the names and addresses of three persons outside the registrants immediate family who will always know his address. Names, relationships and addresses of all the registrants family over age 16 also must be listed. In addition, the form includes questions inquiring whether the registrant believes he qualifies for a hardship deferment, for status as a conscientious objector, for a surviving son exemption, or for other Selective Service deferments and exemptions. Finally, every registrant must list a place of permanent residence, as well as a current mailing address. The draft board serving his permanent residence will be the registrants permanent draft board, regardless of where he registers. When he registers at his own draft board, and when time permits, after he has completed the registration card, the registrant will be issued his Registration Certificate along with his Notice of Classification stating that he has been placed administratively into a holding classification. Class Practically all new registrants will remain in Class until after their lottery drawing which will be held early in the calendar year in which they reach age 19. Those who receive low lottery numbers will then be considered for classification out of Class Young men become draft eligible, provided they do not receive a deferment or exemption, during the calendar year in which they reach age 20. The proposal maintenance buildcalls for a nine-staing, and will be used in conjunction with the present building at this location. 2 will be from Realignment of a point at the north edge of Fountain Green City, to the County line, a distance of nearly six miles, along A county-roaan existing county road. on runs almost parallel to side of the canyon (as the right-han- d one travels toward Fountain Green). This as road has been used as a stock-tra- il well as reaching areas on that side of the canyon, and the smaller canyons leading up into the Red Cliffs area. In years past, the D&RG railroad was in the general vicinity of the county road. Rebuilding and realignment of Highway 132 from Fountain Green City to the Juab County line, and building of a highway maintenance shed will be considered in two public hearings on May 22. First hearing, on the proposed highway maintenance shed will be at the Juab County Courthouse at 10 a.m. on that day, and the second hearing, concerning the proposed rebuilding of will be at Fountain Green City building Ed- Miss Nephi will be selected Saturday and the general public Is invited to be on hand for the evenings festivities. Two Nephi Young Ladies Attend Nurses' Convention Kay Painter and Carol Brown, nursing students at the Brigham Young University, are attending the National Student Nurses convention at Detroit, Michigan this week. They are two of approximat-l- y 30 attending from Utah. Delegates are chosen on basis of grade point average and general academic achievements. Meeting at the convention, pertinent field of professto the ional nursing, will enable the students to receive information that will keep them up to date on the future career. They left by bus on Monday, and were scheduled to arrive in Detroit Wednesday, and return home on May 1.'
