During the past tew months, 57 different ranch operations have developed plans to implement rest rotation grazing systems on their areas of use which includes nearly 700,000 acres of range land. About 120,000 acres of this land is private and State leased land controlled by the ranchers, the remaining amount is public lands on which they are permitted by BLM to graze live stock, Mr. Brough said. Plans for developing rest rotation grazing systems have been completed by the North Divide Livestock Associaton of Beaver for the Mineral Range Allotment, Asby the Deseret Livestock Growers sociation for the Deseret Allotment near Deseret, by Newell and Joy Johnson of Provo for the Knk Allotment east of Garrison; by Blaine Bitner of Salt Lake east City for the Coyote Knoll Allotment Etch-everof Gandy; by John and Raymond of Ogden for the Sand Pass Allotment northwest of Delta; and Jess AlGuymon of Parowan for the Guymon imMilford. of south Complete lotment plementation of these rgazing plans will require some water development and fence construction. The principles of rest rotation grazing provide for a periodic rest of portions of the range until seed of the desirable plant species has developed after which are grazed on the area livestek trampling the seed into the soil. The following year, this area is then rested from use to allow the seed to sprout and the seedlings to grow. This sytsem of grazing use will not only provide better forage species for livestock but it is the primary management tool for improving food and cover for all wildlife species and will provide areas each year for the exclusive use of wildlife without competition with livestock. Increased ground cover from plant establishment provides greater soil stabilization, thus improving the range area as a watershed. We in BLM are quite excited about the results and benefits from this approach to range management, Mr. Brough stated, Now, instead of tolerating livestock on the range, the land manager is using livestock to improve the range for all uses, he concluded.
