Russel Hawkins of Nephi caught one of the large Mack- Inaws known to Inhabit Fish lake He was early Saturday morning. using a small brass spinner on a cotton line. When the fish struck he dived straight to the bottom and for over half an hour a real battle ensued. Knowing that his line was not designed for a real large one, Mr. Hawkins played his line out carefully and gradually wore the fish out. He tipped the scales at 19 pounds 2 ounces. One of the largest crowds ever assembled at Fish lake for an opening day was there Saturday morning. At 4 a. m. boats were pushed away from the shore and casters clad in hlpboots lined the shore. Every available boat was in use and some were unable to hire one. Manv eood catches were made. Those who fished in the streams near Marysvale and Glenwood re ported nice catches also. . "Do you believe that Interests In baseball is dwindling?" I am asked. The only bad business we have had has been in St. Louis and Cincinnati. This, however, is offset by much larger attendance in other sections. Leapue records show that the attendance so far is far ahead of that of last year. In the Polo grounds we have had .some of the largest crowds of several years. No, there is no evidence of general dwindling. In fact, the interest seems to be on the increase. Here is an outside one. but I will answer it: "Has the acquisition of Hornsby strengthened or weakened the defense of "the, Cubs?" In my opinion, Hornsby has strengthened it. From some of the inquiries there seems to be an impression that there is a scarcity of young ball players in. the minors who hold promise of big league, futures. I don't think that can b? determined this early. Some of the early stars may turn out to Be morning glories, while other slow starters may turn out to be the goods. The Giant third baseman had a perfect day at bat, and two of his four hits were homers. Melvin Ott hit his fourteenth home run, while O'Farrell of New York and Herman of Brooklyn also rapped for the circuit. Carl Hubbell was shaky at the start, but soon settled down and won easily with the big lead his mates gave him.
