Show Potential tragedy became pleasant visit Lung Dear Editor: My wife, two young sons and I, along with our two dogs, were traveling at night towards Blanding on Hwy. 95 a few weeks ago when the alternator went out on our car. We were the sole vehicle on the last south-boun- d ferry to Halls Crossing and knew that it wasnt likely that anyone would come up behind us until morning. The temperature was already below freezing and it was beginning to snow pretty heavily. Needless to say, my wife and I were very concerned for our safety. When the alternator quit, so did the cars engine, along with the heater and lights. We were left stranded in the road (no shoulder was available), and we were very concerned about another vehicle slamming into us, as the visability was very poor. Our first hero came out of nowhere; a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer arrived within minutes and had jumper cables so that we could keep our car running, heat and lights on. He used his radio to have a tow truck dispatched for our rescue. Frank Montella, of Montellas Repair in Blanding, deserves to be called our second hero. Frank responded to the call with a friendly smile and warm truck. He loaded us up and drove us to the Best Western Canyonlands Inn. The wonderful folks there could obviously see that we were cold and wet and gave us a very generous room rate. We called out for a great pizza next door, delivered to our hotel room door by a very nice young lady, freezing in the icy rain. Frank and his sons went the extra mile to have our car ready to go the next morning, picked me up at the hotel and drove me to their shop to pick it up. I found out later that our incident had held up several of the Montella men from getting on the road themselves to see their nephew and grandson play in what may have been his last high school football game that afternoon in Nephi! In closing, my family and I are very grateful to the many people in your community (especially the Montellas) who went out of their way to turn what could have been a real tragedy into a pleasant visit to your city. You should be very proud to have so many heros in your community. We plan to return next summer for a family vacation and are very much looking forward to it. With deep appreciation, Brad, Kathy, Zac, Josh, (& Max and Kodi) Mimlitz Summit County, UT transplant for former area resident Dave Himmerich, formerly of Monticello, recently completed a successful lung trans- plant surgery at the University of Utah Medical Center. It is reported that Himmerich is doing well in the hospital, and will be released from the hospital in approximately a week. Himmerich recently moved from Monticello and his position as recreation manager for the Bureau of Land Management. He was on the organ donor replacement list for only 12 days before he received the lung transplant surgery that was necessary. Many potential organ recipients spend months or even years on the transplant list and some do not survive their wait on that list. Only 20 percent of donors have lungs that are suitable for transplant. Himmerich can receive cards and notes at 1569 W 3280 S, Unit 14C, Salt Lake City, UT 84119-7150.
