Show THE JUAN Page Broncos claim their sixth state Wednesday, November volleyball title in past eight years Lady Bucks run into tough draw at state tourney SAN The San Juan Bronco volleyball team claimed its sixth state championship trophy in the past eight years with a convincing run in the 2A state tournament, held October 29 and 30 at Utah Valley State College in Orem. The Broncos faced a host of challenges on their way to the championship game, but then swept arch rival Richfield in three straight games to claim the title. The well rounded Bronco squad was simply too much for Richfield in the championship match and won the games by the score of 25-1- 27-2- 5, 25-1- 1, 4. Behind an imposing front line of Shalie Flannery, Kendra Lyman, and Gena Meyer, who each had 10 ills in the championship game and setter Cheyna Shumway, who ran the offense with precision, scoring 35 assists in the final game, the Broncos left little doubt about who was the bet team in the 2 A ranks. It was a somewhat rocky road to the finals for the Broncos, who lost games but not matches in their quarterfinal and semifinal matches. San Juan opened the tournament with a convincing first round victory over the Kanab Cowboys 25-1- 8, and 25-1- 7, 25-1- In the quarterfinals, the Broncos faced the North Summit Braves. They won the first two games easily, 25-1and 25-1- 7 before dropping a marathon third game 30-3Howthe Broncos came roaring ever, back in the final game of the 4 2. match and won to to vance the semifinals. ad- 25-1- 5 In the semi finals, San Juan met the Beaver Beavers. Once again, they were pushed by their opponent, winning the first game and the second game before dropthe third game In ping the deciding game, the Broncos beat the Beavers 25-1- 9 to earn a spot in the championship game against Richfield. San Juan only lost one 2A match in the season and it was to Richfield. However, this match was all Broncos, as they won 25-1- 1 in the first game, eked out a narrow 27-2- 5 vicin two and ran away tory game 25-1- 8 26-2- 4 17-2- 5. with the state title tory in the third game. vic- 25-1- 4 The Lady Bucks won the match in four games. Leading the team offensively was Stevie Young with seven kills. Katie Andrews added five more. Jennifer Garcia, Whitney Christensen and Natalie Randall added 11 more kills. Stevie and Katie combined for 13 blocks in the match. Defensive play was led by Keri Ramsay with 16 digs, Jennifer followed with 12. There was a team total of 41 digs defensively. Raevan Church and Kashay Warehain combined for 19 assists. Scores of the match were 26- 24, 25-1- 0, 14-2- and 5, 25-1- 3. With the win, the Lady Bucks advanced. As luck would have it, two of the top teams stood in the way of the Lady Bucks placing in the tournament. The team knew they would have to pull off an upset to stay in the tourney. The next match was against second seeded Richfield cats. The team started the match a little timid and gave the Wildcats a lead. Each game, the Lady Bucks played better, but were not able to pull off a win. Jennifer led the offense with seven kills, followed by Stevis five. Kashay had nine assists, Raevan had six and Liz Randall had three. The defense was also led by Jennifer with nine digs. Keri picked up eight, Kelly Ramsay had six, while Tara Garcia and Kashay added four each. The Monticello High School volleyball team participated in the 2A State volleyball tournament at Utah Valley State College October 29 and 30. The team went into the tournament with a second place seed in Region 13. The first game was against the Grand County Red Devils. It was a year with numerous teams in the 2A ranks that were capable of beat ing any other team on any given day, and the competition was tough. Scrappy Whitehorse loses State 1A volleyball title, brings home second place trophy by Leo Platero On October 29 at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Whitehorse was four points short of claiming the Utah State 1 A Volleyball Championship. However, they fell just short and the Rich Rebels con- tinued their dominance in Class 1A volleyball by winning their sixth straight state championship and 12th in the last 13 years. Rich barely outlasted the scrappy Whitehorse Raiders It was a tough match for the Rebels, as they had to win the last match to get the title. I was definitely nervous, Richs outside hitter Stephanie Floyd said. It was a lot harder than last year. The Rebels (ranked 1) defeated Whitehorse (ranked 3) in three games at the Region 16 Championship last week25-1- 6, 21-2- 5, 26-2- 8, 15-1- 2. end. They were a totally different team tonight, Rich coach Cindy Stuart said. They gave us a totally different look. After a shaky start in the first game, Whitehorse took the next two games.
