Long, a San Juan Record subscriber, writes to inform me that we made a mistake in our coverage of the death of Quinn A. Keith, a Marine from San Juan County who was killed in action in Iraq. Our September 15, 2004 headline reads, Local Soldier Killed in Iraq. Of course, Keith was a Marine, not a soldier. The subtle distinction between a member of the Army and a member of the Marine Corps escaped me until Long wrote. Long adds, There are major differences between both of these services. We respect one another and can win battles together. The only thing that is the same is that we serve and fight for the same cause and protection of this great land we call America. Let me know if dog making racket Dear Editor; I ve spent most of early Sunday morning awake because a neighbor s dog has barked or howled most of the morning. The nearest I can tell, the offending dog is at a house about 100 West Central in Monticello. However, I think the owners are out of town for the weekend. About 5:00 a.m., I tried to call them and ask them to quiet their dog, but only got their answering machine. When I finally got fed up with it about 6:50 a.m. and called in a complaint to the Sheriffs Office, then of course the dog quit barking. But it is too late as I am wide awake! Surely more neighbors than just me heard this lonely dogs barking tirade this morning. I am writing this letter asking that the more immediate neighbors call their neighbors with the offending dog and let these good people know whats gone on this otherwise quiet Sunday morning. Maybe when they hear from more of us, theyll do something about their dog. I am afraid that if they dont take care of their own problem, some otherwise good citizen will take matters into their own hands and silence the offending canine once and for all. Being a myself, I would hate to see that happen. Also, if my dog makes such a racket when Im out of town, I would hope my neighbors would let me know as well. - ZIP CODE: TELEPHONE NO.
