Show tup: SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - want the Principals and Page 12 2A school realignment proposed From time to time, it is necessary for the people to remind bureaucrats that their decisions actually impact real people. I usually try to stay pretty low key about things, but this 2A school realignment issue just made me blow a cork. The Utah High School Ahletic Asso-ciatio- n realize that we have to travel some. We go five hours to catch a plane. We travel several hours to shop at a big mall. We know that we have to do things like this, and generally we accept this as a part of the price of living here. However, we and our students should NOT be over penalized because we live (UHSAA) has a Board of here. These other schools dont want to Trustees that determine what regions schools play in and how many kids have to be in the by Gary Torres school. The board of trustees proposal has Monticello High School (with 152 students) in a region with Emery High School (with 536 students). I realize I am not the brightest crayon in the box, but how can this be fair? I checked around and found that I am not the only one who thinks this is stupid. It turns out that the 2A principals got together and after much arguing, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, reached a consensus and offered up a proposal that made sense. The UHSAA Board of Trustees is ignoring this 2A principal recommendation. Why? Because there are some schools that dont want to travel more than one hour and the votes are controlled by larger schools. We all live down here in southeast Utah because we want to be here. And we all travel over here cause it is be- perintendent to feel like they just have our support, I want them to feel like they have a mandate from the people in Monticello and Blanding to go and fight like hell for the interest of our students. The last thing we want our administrators to do is go up to a meeting feeling like the community doesnt really care or have no opinion about this. We dont want them to roll over and give in to the northern schools. This could affect your kids for the next five years. I, for one, am so tired of always getting the short end of the stick because we live down here. It is too far. We all know the mentality that for some reason it is further for people to travel from Monticello than it is for us to travel from Monticello to Salt Lake City. The 2A principals even looked at travel time and compared it to the current 2A Dear San Juan and Yes, Monticello would still have to travel the most, but their be cut al- most 50 percent. It would be preferable if the ratio were lower.
