Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - Page 8 Marine Corps news Utah Arts Council announces Marine Corps Pfc. Joshua Johns, son of Helen T. and Freddie J. Johns of Monument Valley, is currently on deployment while assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), home based in Camp Pendleton, California. Members of Johns unit recently completed operations in Iraq. The MEU conducted more than 300 patrols in Southern Iraq, including 50 by the MEUs boat company. Johns unit also trained local police in the setup of security checkpoints, confiscated weapons and destroyed more than 2,000 rounds of ordnance, much of which was found near villages and playgrounds. Johns unit is an expeditionary intervention force with the ability to rapidly organize for combat operations in virtually any environment. MEUs are composed of more than 2,000 personnel and are divided into an infantry battalion, aircraft squadron, support group and command element. With this combination, Johns unit supplies and sustains itself for either quick mission accomplishment or clearing the way for follow-o- folk arts apprenticeship grant Applications for 2004 Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program Grants are now available through the Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council. Interested individuals should call George Schoemaker, Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program Grant administrator, at The grant deadline is December 31. Due to limited funding, only eight to ten apprenticeships are awarded each year. The apprenticeship program is a learning situation in which a master artist teaches his or her skill to an apprentice who wants to develop his or her skills in a traditional art form.
