During the early part of WWII, Fran was employed at Lockheed Aircraft making precision templates for the P38 tional monument, was receiving a modicum of publicity as a tourist destination. Central to these attractions was the town of Moab, which environs were to become the focal point of Fran Barnes attention for the remainder of his life. During his travels, Fran had started writing for outdoors magazines such as Ti'ailer Life so it was only natural that he continue doing so once he settled in Moab. The couple soon moved to Fresno, CA where they both worked for North American Aviation, then to the San Francisco bay area, where jobs awaited them in Desert were the first area magazines to which Fran con- traveler information. This was followed by four newsprint publications called Canyon Country Trails & Highlights, each issue describing several recreational adventures and scenic areas. The popular Canyon Country series really took off in 1977 when Fran was asked to author and illustrate a book on hiking in the region. Next followed books on exploring, camping and geology, after which the prolific authors in- terests branched out into prehistoric Indians and their rock art. By the time the series reached No. 15, Frans publisher announced his retirement and, with a new book tributed, and he was soon writing illustrated articles for about Arches and Natural scores of others. Fran also contributed many articles, on both history and natural history, to the Canyon Legacy, the journal of the Dan OLaurie-Canyo- n Country Museum. Recently, he had been vitally interested in seeing that the museum become a part of the Dinosaur Triangle. For the last three years of his life, Fran had made a detailed study of the heretofore unknown complexities of the regional Navajo Sandstone. By the time of his death, Fran had finally succeeded in bringing his startling findings to the serious attention of the scienwell-publiciz- tific community. Fran Barnes is survived by his wife Terby, daughter Terry Lan Lewis, grandson Caleb Lewis, both of Carbondale, CO, and sisters, Shirley Steed of Santa Cruz, CA and Lorraine Fero of Rimrock, AZ. Among Frans final wishes was to call attention, particularly of young people, to the dangers of overexposure to the suns rays.
