Illegals continue to cross our border and life goes on as usual. A daily occurance, illegals travel through Utah, but when stopped, there is usually no system in place to deal with them. So on they go to their new life in America. Most of us can understand hard working people who wish a better life for themselves and their children. But what about illegals of disrepute who come here to prey? Doesnt it seem imperative that we control and regulate who comes to our great land? With this thought in mind I have written a twist to this familiar poem ... Give me your serial killers, your rapists and child abusers. Your criminal masses and mentally ill yearning to breathe free, the wretched pornographers, thieves, drug traffickers and sociopaths of to me your teaming shore. But the Powers That Be continue to turn a blind eye to the matter of illegals. How can we teach the importance of law to each new generation when our own government ignores its own laws? The Monticello, San Juan Record is a member ot the Utah Press Association and National Newspaper Association Dear Editor: Reading about the passing of Ken Maughan reminded me of an incident I had with him while attending the old Monticello School at the park, when; the tractor is now. Ken was my sixth grade teacher. Our classroom was in the north east corner of the building. Our desks were old wooden desks with inkwells. The lid would raised to allow you to store books beneath the desktop. Several were mounted one behind the other on two parallel wooden rails. Just before recess one day, I dropped some paper on the floor. Ken saw me drop the paper and asked if I had dropped it. I responded that I had. lie asked, Do you remember the classroom rule to throw unwanted paper into the wastebasket? I responded that I had. lie then said, Fine, at recess, before you can leave, you will have to pick up all the paper off the floor. At the time, the room seemed very large to me. I did not relish the thought of having to clean the floor. I became horrified when I noticed that several classmate's had begun to tear pages out of their notebooks, and tear them into tiny piece's, dropping them between the two floor rail of their desk anel scattering them with their feet. Several succeeded in coating the whole floor - the entire length of the two rails under their desk - with paper. I was dreading recess. When recess arrived, Ken did something I have never forgotten. He said, I have changed my mind. I have decided to have each of you clean up under your own desks before you go out for recess. Wow! That endeared him to me forever. I deem myself most fortunate to have had he and his brother Dale for teachers. Fortunate, because from them and so many other teachers in Monticello, I not only received good academic lessons, but good lessons in life as well. We had a record number of people come to the carnival. Thanks to those who were so patient when we ran out of prizes, twice! Thanks to the teachers who served up a fabulous dinner. We have the best teachers in the world! Next time you see one, tell them you think so too. Thanks to Mr. Nielson and Mrs. Slade, who gave time and resources to help pull the carnival off. Thanks also to the janitors and sweepers who do such a great job and are so willing to help. The local business support was overwhelming. We appreciate all our local business owners do to support the PTA. In return, we hope we are doing all we can to support them. Last but not least, thanks to Mrs. Pehrson and her husband the Mayor, LoyRetta Crane, Amanda Frost, JaNell Jack, Liesel Jack, Kayla Ramsay, Liz Weatherford, Annie Anderson, Kaylynn Petersen, Marcie Nielson, Heather Holyoak, Natalie Freestone, and Jessica Pipkin, who gave 3 hours to take tickets and man the booths.
