Show TUP: SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, November 12, 2003 - m 435S67827A1.8 Page 6 New approach to lighting City Park the citizens of Monticello: The trees in City Park have become so large that it has become increasingly difficult and expensive to decorate them with Christmas lights. Even after stringing the lights, City Park is just not as beautiful as it once was. Because of this, we would like to try a new approach to lighting the park this year. We will need your help. In addition to decorating the smaller trees, shrubs and other possible areas, we would like to add other decorations in the park. We would like to see a lighted village (approximately six feet high), lighted train cars to go behind the big tractor, Santa scenes, religious scenes and so forth. These could be constructed out of various materials (but should be weatherproof) including iron, rebar, rope light, mini lights, NOV To The San Juan Record wel- comes letters from our readers. We would like to see individuals, families, groups and organizations build these decorations. This is something that could be added to each year, just like many of you do with the small village scones in your own homes. The Monticello, San Juan Record is a member of the Utah Press Association and National Newspaper Association Dear Readers: Now that the election is over, it is time to answer the critics over the Blanding City Council selection of Sarah Swapp as director of the Blanding City Recreation Department. We were looking for an individual that would take our Recreation Department into the future. The Director needed to look past what has been done and bring new ideas into the position. The Director needed to take the load off of Chris (Webb) so he didnt have to check up and make sure things are getting done. The Director needed to have enough education to write grants, to help get new equipment to offset what the City coffers cannot. Our Recreation Department should not be solely for our youth. Although youth do play a large part, the Department should concern itself in finding ways to get each member of the community into some type of recreational program. In the past, I have semi no attempt to help the elderly, the obese, the handicapped or anyone other than those between the ages of 2 and 40 and are healthy. It was said that it is all about competition. If this is the way our recreation program is going to go, Blanding City will open itself lip to many lawsuits from the citizens that it is failing. How can Blanding City ask you to pay your taxes so that we can have programs to help a select few from the community? Our decision, or at least mine, was based on the fact that Sarah has a degree in Recreation (which has not been mentioned previously). Neither of the other two applicants have a degree in recreation.
