Show 20 San Juan Happenings AprilMay 1998 ( the Discover has been identified as part of a huge Apatosaurus pelvis and is displayed along with graphics to show the immense size of the animal. Because only a dozen partial skeletons of Apatosaurus have been discovered, this fossil is a significant contribution to science as well as to the museum. Museum visitors take a walk through time, viewing a 360 pound meteorite estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old, the remains of amphibians and reptiles that lived before the dinosaurs, and a fossilized log standing upright for the first time in 275 million years. The exhibits show how dinosaurs really looked, from their skeletons out to their skins and down to their footprints. Skeletons range from the European Plateosaurus to the Dilophosaurus of the Four Corners area. The history of paleontology as a formal science began in 1770 when the skull and jaws of a large reptile called a Mosasaurus were found in a mine in the Netherlands.- - The only cast of this fossil on public display anywhere in the world is in The Dinosaur Museum. It is part of an exhibit that traces the development of this science through exhibits showing artistic representations and scholarly publications about dinosaurs. Stephen Czerkas, the museums paleontologist, is the leading authority on dinosaur skin, and the museum has a New exhibits are constantly appearing at The Dinosaur Museum in Blanding, Utah. Interpretive signs have been added throughout the museum showing how the world may have looked during different eras of time and how the movements of the continents would have effected the dinosaurs evolution and led to their eventual extinction. The biggest new addition, in size, is a complete freestanding skeleton of a Mongolian Tyrannosaur, the only such cast on display in the United States. It was brought to the museum through an exchange with the Queensland Museum of Australia. This fearsome giant is displayed in the new Cretaceous Hall, an exhibit that is now under construction. Viewing - windows allow visitors to watch the exhibits progress as a massive Slyracosaurus d and five very lively are gradually surrounded by a natural Deinonychus (raptors) e diorama setting of prehistoric trees and plants, huge skeletal wall graphics, and a rare fossil of a mummified tail from a duckbill dinosaur. Many of the new displays, including the 20 foot Styracosaurus, were originally part of the exhibition Dinosaurs A Global View which was created by Stephen and Sylvia Czerkas, Directors of the Dinosaur Museum. The Global View exhibition traveled the U.S. and Europe for five years and was displayed in many major museums including the Smithsonian. Another impressive display presents one of the giants of the Blanding area. It was donated by Mr. Joseph Lyman. This fossil was found in the area around forty years ago.
