The department says it needs the time to review reams of information and the computer models used to show- WIPP can store radioactive waste for 10,000 years. Some of the waste will come from the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant west of Denver. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will review WIPP data during the next year. Computer models purport to show that the salt caverns 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad will be able to contain waste from the nations defense industry for 10,000 years. We want to be sure the computer models are correct, said Dennis Hum of the DOEs Carlsbad office. DOE and XlPPs private contractor, Wcstinghouse, submitted 104,000 pages to EPA. 1 he EPA informed the DOE it cannot complete the required rule making until April 1998 at the earliest. Lokesh Chaturvedi, deputy director of the Environmental Evaluation Group, said the delay was caused by the submission of an incomplete DOE application.
