Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November 27, 1996 - Page 10 Letters to Editor (continued from page 2) ability to see the country, we are alarmed at the number of signs that have appeared in the county during recent years, cutting off the access roads to these regions. Now we are still not allowed to see our own county, where we have lived and paid taxes for all these years. For example, one of the areas we have always wanted to see is the Shay Mountain area and the overlooks into Canyonlands. Most of you realize that the south and west side of Shay Mountain is inaccessible because the roads are now impassable, whereas the northeast side has been restricted to bikes, horses, and hikers. Since we do not have the physical or financial means to participate in these sports, viewing this area is no longer attainable to us or to the ordinary individual, especially to Senior Citizens. This is just one example of the many roads that have been restricted recently by the BLM and Forest Service. We were also alarmed at how many restricted signs appeared in the Comb Wash area this spring. During the months of February-Marc- h 1996, we observed that the number of restricted signs in this area increased dramatithree-wheeler- s, cally. Thus we can state that we feel the BLM and Forest Service have been practicing management policies that are prejudicial to Senior Citizens and other physically handicapped individuals. We have just as much right to the inspiration of the magnificence of God's Creations as the healthy individuals who live on Wasatch Front and visit here once or twice a year. This June we took some family members and friends to view Arch Canyon Over look. A nice staircase enabled even those of us who are handicapped to view this thrilling vista. But when we visited in August, the staircase had been removed. We believe this iron staircase was removed in an effort to qualify the area as wilderness designation. We believe that such an effort was illegal and prejudicial to handicapped and Senior Citizens. It is now impossible for us to share this experience with our families. Now, this week BLM and Kent Walter put a legal notice in the two local papers that BLM intended to stop all motorized vehicles from entering any of the canyons of Comb Wash. Why did Kent Walter use the method of legalese to inform the members of the county about his intentions? We encourage all county members to write letters protesting these prejudicial policies of the BLM to Kent Walter and to the State BLM office. Isn't this a legal country where these decisions are made by Legislative bodies elected by the people? Civil Servants, such as BLM and Forest Service personnel, are hired to represent the interests of the people and are not able to run for office. When these civil servants start representing special interest groups, it becomes time to remove them from office by using the power of recall. These trends toward more government intervention in San Juan County, as well as other counties of Southern Utah and in the Western States, is alarming. We further feel that the environmental groups are trying to convert San Juan County and the entire Southern Utah into a playground for the healthy and wealthy of the rich elitist extreme environmentalists living on the Wasatch Front, California, and Colorado. We are not blind to the importance of good land management and preservation of the beauty of this unique country. An individual need only to drive over the border into Colorado to see the devastation that can be raised by greedy individu- als who have destroyed the land in their efforts to get personal wealth. We have also seen the destruction of Anasazi ruins that surthe round us. Last summer our children hiked to a relatively unknown ruin and observed the pristine area with the ruin that had been preserved for centuries. This ruin was so preserved that it contained original mortar and first-han- d logs. Dear Editor: Turkey Award Nomination While turkeys are on our minds, let me give a nomination to G. Gordon Liddy (as heard on our local radio station) for his persistent effort to promote sexism. Today he crossed the line (who knows, maybe he does it all the time) by offering to trade a book of political opinions for pictures of naked women. How does this man get away with saying Bill Clinton has no moral character? As a teacher, I am concerned about the perception our youth have toward the opposite sex. As long as national media gurus such as Liddy are allowed to promote MESA JAVA Winter hours: 7:30-- pm greeted with an official BLM registration book, as well as hikers from California and Colorado. They were shocked by the destruction that had occurred within one short year. The majority of the people of San Juan County have conscientiously preserved these areas for over 100 years, practicing principles of preservation of the ar- chaeological sites and of wise land management while engaging in mining, farming, and grazing activities. A few people have been guilty of abandoning these principles, and the people of San Juan County have been swift in punishing these perpetrators. We call upon the citizens of San Juan County to unite with our County Commissioners in fighting this increasing abuse of our lands and the advancing stranglehold of the government.
