Castle, an Albuquerque, New Mexico man who was originally arrested in 1994 for traveling 68 miles per hour in San Juan County, was sentenced by Seventh District Court Judge Scott Johansen on November 20. Castle was found guilty of resisting arrest and other charges that began when he was pulled over for speeding on U.S. Highway 191 by Utah Highway Trooper Doug Hall. Patrol Castle claims that, as a Constitutionalist, he is not bound to many of the laws of the United States. Castle has vowed to appeal court rulings all the way to the Supreme Court in order to overthrow the entire legal system in the United States. After a series of court ap- pearances, during which Castle was placed in jail for contempt of court by District Court Judge Lyle Anderson, Castle was found guilty by Johansen after Anderson was removed from the case. Johansen sentenced Castle to one year in the San Juan County Jail and no probation. Johansen suspended six months of the sentence and issued a $1,200 fine. Castle was represented in sentencing by Brad Rich of Ron Gingrich law firm in Salt Lake City. Castle plans an appeal and he could be released while the appeal is pending. In addition to the six month sentence and $1,200 fine, Castle has forfeited $17,000 in bonds in the legal process which has taken more than two years to date and appears to be far from settled.
